I have a 1992 Camaro that came with a stock 305 TBI V8, T-5 Transmission, and a stock GM 10 Bolt 7.5 Rear End with 3.08 gears. I have alot of questions about swapping these motors out.
305 TBI V8 to 350 Carbeurated Engine.
The motor, transmission, and rear end have been pulled out along with just about everything with the car except for the interior. The entire front suspension has been rebuilt and I am working on getting the rear end back together so that its a rolling chassis and I'm taking it to get media blasted completely 100%. The 350 V8 I am getting can be viewed at this website:
The motor is a 350 carbeurated with 351 HP and 400 LB TQ. Here goes the questions:
1. I need to upgrade my cooling system and I need a 2 core aluminum radiator and a high flow electric fan setup. Where can I find these items for a good price??????????????????????????????????? Remember the radiator has to be made for a manual transmission that will be a direct fit into the car.
2. Where can I find a fuel sending unit for this motor that is compatible with the stock tank because the old sending unit is junk?????????????????
No junk yards please preferably brand new.
3. I am going to be using a on the block Holley 80gph mechanical fuel pump. Many of you are going to say go with the Walbro 255 and Mallory 4309. DON'T want it because if the pump goes out then I have to pull alot apart just to swap it out. I'm in the military and I don't have alot of free time to tinker around. So this is my question. How do I need to run the fuel system setup from the tank to carb and back to the tank using steel braided lines????????????????????????
4. Where can I get a BRAND NEW front bumper cover, and front spoiler for something less than 300 a piece???????????? Does anybody know?????
5. Since I am going to carbeuration and doing away completely with the wiring harness how do I need to set up the wiring for the motor, lights, antenna, and the in car gauges????????????????? The instrument panel is out of the car and as you all know its just a circuit board on the back and its all hooked in to wires on the steering column. So How do I do It???????????????????????????? PLEASE BE VERY DETAILED AND MAKE SURE A 2 YEAR OLD COULD UNDERSTAND. AS FOR THE GAUGE PART I CAN ALWAYS GO WITH SOME AFTERMARKET GAUGES FROM AUTOMETER AND HOW WOULD I WIRE THOSE UP???????? PREFERABLY I WOULD LIKE TO STAY WITH THE STOCK GAUGE CLUSTER FOR RIGHT NOW.
6. AS YALL KNOW THE OLD WIRING HARNESS CAME THROUGH THE FIREWALL OF THE DRIVERS SIDE NEXT TO THE BRAKE BOOSTER. WHAT THE HELL DO I DO WITH THAT THING STICKING OUT OF THE FIREWALL????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
ALL OF THE NEW PARTS THAT ARE GOING TO BE SURROUNDING THE MOTOR I WISH FOR THEM TO BE BRAND NEW AT THE LOWEST COST POSSIBLE. NO JUNK YARD STUFF.
Thanks to everyone who replies to this post. I really appreciate all of the help.
1. You should be fine with the stock third gen radiator and fan setup, the stock radiator is a 2core, aluminum radiator and the electric fan will keep it cool as well.
2. You can get a replacement unit from Autozone, Advanced auto as well, but since you're going to go carb......
3. You need to get a sender for a carb car so it doesn't have to pull through the pump, to be honest....going with the 255lph and the FPR, you would be better off, the 255's are very reliable (as long as you get a Walbro brand) I have one in my Mustang (6 years), one in my GTA with the LT1 (3 years) and when I have to replace it, I'll have one in my '98 T/A LS1 car.
4. If you can find a new front bumper for 300 bucks, I would jump all over it. It will be aftermarket, it will be thicker material than the stock one as well since you can't get new GM anymore.
5/6. The bulkhead connector that is next to the brake booster has all of the harness for your lights, tach, oil pressure, etc etc that has to stay it also has the wiring for your speedo since it's electric, you will have to find a way to drive it since you are ditching the TBI and the ECM helps to control the speedo.
Pretty much, junk yard is the only way to find alot of parts that are needed for these cars to keep the cost low and you may have to go that route.
I've seen new fuel tanks at the chain parts stores, but not new pick-ups. Your best bet would be to convert it from in-tank pump to mechanical-style pick-up. There's a sticky in the top section of the Carburetor forum about that.
I understood that the TBI cars had a VSS buffer separate from the ECM to drive the speedometer. Will work without the ECM. But, that's only what I've heard around here, I don't have any personal experience in that area.
I have found a new sending unit for about 150 bucks. I know which lines coming out of the sending unit are what. The only sending unit I could find is for a FI Camaro. It has four lines. Supply, Return, Breather, and EGR Valve something or other. Would I be able to just cut the EGR part off close to the top of the sending unit and just solder it shut because I won't need it? I figure it would have a cleaner look to it. Let me know what you think.

On my 89 T/A the speed buffer box was under the kick panel. You have to get 12v and a ground to it and it will work on it's own. I thought it would work on it's own but it won't. Even the ground I had to hook up.
