need help 85 trans am 305 tpi to 350 tpi

i have a 85 trans am and my 305 took a crap on me this was my first car and have had it for 6 years and i told my self i would never sell it. but i was wondering how hard it would be to swap out a 350 from a 89 trans am to my 85. i found the 89 with the 350 carb at a local pick and pull the full car cost 2000 i was wondering if its worth spending the money. or is it possible to find a cheap 350 fix it up and port my 305 tpi and put it on the 350?

If your willing to spend that much, buy the 350/290 engine from GM. It's just over $2000 and it puts out 290 horse. And that's a brand new engine, not rebuilt. Then you can swap over 98% of your 305 parts. The 350 is an older style so no Vortec heads and then drop that wench in and you'll be laughing. If it's an 85 would it not be TBI instead of TPI?

'85 cars came with either Carb or TPI. No TBI available (except the 4 banger). '85 was the first year for TPI. It was only available in a 305 for that year.

Check the tech data. Besides. I own an '85 TPI.

That sounds suspiciously like a 305 TBI. Check it carefully, get the 8th character of the VIN, etc.

Re: need help 85 trans am 305 tpi to 350 tpi

ya i was looking at the 350/290 cuz of the price but i dont know how hard it would be to put my tpi on it. i was also looking at just rebuilding my 305 and putting a sts turbo system on it, i live like 20 miles from there main factory where the make the kits and they said they would help me install and tune it for free so thats also an option. they told me they put a system on a 86 and it got them 130 hp and 145 torque. the kit is only 1800.00 plus i could keep my tpi and would be a quick eazy boost in power.
