350rebuild or 350 crate motor?
I have a 350 1401207stock with high miles
im want to get some hp out of it but dont know witch way to go
rebuild plus upgrade cam/heads/intake etc or my friend has a
GM 350 turn key crate motor with a mild cam for 2500 still in the box
So my question is how much do you think it would cost to have a 350 rebuilt? with a few mods?
Any help would be great

Re: 350rebuild or 350 crate motor?
IMO that's a pretty decent motor. I would personally prefer the l31 crate motor but you are getting a good deal on that one. The only worry is its flat tappet so you have to put an oil additive in every oil change or use special oil due to that whole ZDDP change to oil.
Properly rebuilding a motor to be as reliable as the crate motor is going to be pricey, not to mention the waiting on machine work. The labor cost if you dont do it yourself would bring it up even more. I havent priced out anything as far as building for a long time, but if I were you and had the money right now, Id get the crate motor off of your friend.
Do you guys have emissions in Fl? That would be my only other concern.
edit: heres a good article on the capabilities of that crate motor http://www.carcraft.com/projectbuild...all/index.html

Re: 350rebuild or 350 crate motor?
That crate motor will give you right around 270hp at the rear wheels. That being said its its not much more than a stock 350 will put out.
What are you looking to do with the car, street/strip, street only?
What tranny do you have now? 330bhp/380 ft.lbs. is right at the limit for a stock T-5 maybe a little much.
A rebuild will require new pistons, bearings, possibly new cam if you want. You can keep the stock rods and crank and get the rotating assembly all balance to produce more hp.
you could get about the same hp and torque for less in a rebuild it all just depends on how wild you u want to get.
Lets put it this way i spent $2200 on a 383 stroker fully forged, and balanced, rotating assembly and another $250 on cam and lifters.
you can get a cast crank, rods and hyperautic pistons for right around $1000.
Is this a 2 piece rear main seal or 1 piece?

With the block you have, you're pretty much limited to flat tappet cam without going to an expensive retrofit roller cam. ZDDP isn't that big of an issue, just use a diesel oil rated for CI-4+ and SL, and you'll have the wear protection you'll need.
If you do rebuild your current 350, this is a pretty decent deal for heads & intake http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...RPMAirGap.aspx . Figure on about $800-$1000 for the shortblock, you'll have a pretty good package.
