Re: 400hp 305
Can you actually drive it and try it out? Or is the engine already out of the car? I would never, NEVER, buy a 305 for that kind of money unless I could have it proven to me that it has the power that he claims. If he can let you test drive good, if he has paperwork showing that it gets 400hp, even better. 400hp from a 305 is doable, but takes lot of work. If he can't prove his claims, I'd move along. just my

It's out of the car on an engine stand he can turn it on and all but doesn't show much other then that it works but its not about the power anyway is 650$ worth it just for a working motor my 350 has a cracked cylinder head

Re: 400hp 305
I don't think it is. The last 305 I bought I paid 200 for it. It was all stock, no intake and all that, but I just swapped everything over and it ran fine. Also, you said your car is a 92. I'm going on the assumption that you haven't modified it too much. swapping from a 350 to a 305 is gonna be hell on your wiring. It looks like this engine is carbed, so you could eliminate most of it, but you would also need to work out a way to lock up your torque convertor in your trans without the computer. more wiring. If your good with that kind of stuff that's cool. Just make sure you do the research. Otherwise I'd look for a decent 350 long-block that you can just swap all your parts over to. You could probably find a nice used 350 for 300-400, then go over it and do all the seals and gaskets. Drop it in and you've got a nice, reliable 350 and you didn't have to mess with any wiring.

Re: 400hp 305
alright, well yeah I think it's probably worth the 650. I didn't realize that you already had a swap done on it. Is the 350 in your car carbed? Or is it the TPI setup with the computer and all the wiring

It's still the original tbi but I never changed wiring fuel injectors or anything couldn't get arou d to it because **** kept messing up the head gasket blew twice and I'm assume its from the cracked cylinder head plus my piston rings are burnt out they got me good on that 350 lol I question whether this 305 is really 400hp but whether it inor isn't I don't care I just want something reliable also forgot to add it has a street avenger carb apparently the guys work truck blew up he needs the money bad lol he was gonna put this in a old Chevy pickup

I only have a very basic knowledge of motors and just want to make sure I'm not getting ripped off he said he'd write up a sale contract to so I can hold him liable if the block is bad

Re: 400hp 305
To be honest man, I still think I would look for either a stock 350 or even go back to a stock 305. I've been thinking about it, and unless you are really comfortable with redoing wiring, going from that TBI to carb is gonna be a pain.

Re: 400hp 305
Here's a tech article on doing a swap from tbi to carb.
https://www.thirdgen.org/carbswap
It's a great place to start, and has all the info you would need. It also says in there that you don't need to wire up the lockup on the trans, but that it will cost you some gas mileage. Read through that, and if you think you can do the wiring, pull and drop the engine in, then hey man, go for it. That last post was based off thinking it was a lot harder than it actually looks to be.

Re: 400hp 305
Let's use process of elimination to see if that 305 actually has the potential for 400 horsepower.
400 horsepower out of a 305 is going to require some pretty specific stuff.
Does this motor have a good set of aftermarket heads? (or at least a well worked set of good GM heads like Vortecs or 113s) If not, it probably doesn't make 400 horsepower.
Does the motor have a radical cam that makes it idle rough? If not, it probably doesn't have 400 horsepower.
Does the motor have a single plane intake and carb setup that can support 7,000 rpm? If not, it probably doesn't have 400 horsepower.
Does the motor have a high quality aftermarket valvetrain that's stable up to 7,000 rpm? If not, the motor probably doesn't have 400 horsepower.
Overall, the point that I'm making is that in order to get 400 horsepower out of a 305, there are some serious steps that need to be taken, and the builder has to know what he's doing, which means he'll have no problem showing you all of these parts, along with the receipts. Otherwise, it's just another 200 horsepower 305 being talked up by some blowhard.
