ZZ3 for a 89 bird

Hi all came across someone selling a ZZ3 engine for 1600. I am new to this and am wondering if this is a good engine I was looking for a L31 but can't seem to find one. Any advise you could give would be great thanks

Re: ZZ3 for a 89 bird

I have officially given up on trying to find a good used long block. Now I just have to decide if I want to go forward with this car or get something else.

Re: ZZ3 for a 89 bird

i have zz3 350 too... and the zz3 was rated at 345hp and 387ft lbs of tq. with emission hooked up its 308hp and 365ft lbs, emissions legal too. a L31 is only factory rated at 255hp 330ft lbs of tq. Both motors have high points to them. L31 has vortec heads, but the zz3 has aluminum heads from L98 corvette, the ZZ3's cam is much bigger and the zz3 has a high nickel content 4 bolt main block.

Production 4 bolt block, nothing really special about them. Same with the ZZ4.

did you like how the ZZ3 did with tpi? im curious because i like fuel injection but i figured a stock tpi would set it back a lil bit because the zz3 hit peak power @ 5300 rpm. my best guess is that with tpi i would be at peak power around 4700-5000 rpm. the good and bad thing would be the torque curve... i'd love it but the drivetrain will hate it lol

you're right nothing "really" special, but a good base for a supercharged or turbo project. switch out the hypereutectic pistons for some forged piston and crank up the boost lol ok not that high.... a lil lower... a lil lower... right there is perfect

Re: ZZ3 for a 89 bird

yes it was impressive with stock tpi for just an engine swap I was running a 13.882 @ 99.58
it dropped almost a full second from my l98 cammed 305
its worth the 1600 if that's what you found it for
if you plan on keeping tpi you will need 22lb injectors and the 350 prom for the computer the maf will adjust the tune to the cam as its not very radical and the cam just works great with tpi power it feels good till around 4800 with tpi
will pull away from equally modded l98 cars but honsestly think of it as a corvette l98 with a bigger cam and forged crank and rods reason I say its worth the 1600 Is to build and engine with the same parts would cost much more
I just installed a superram plenum and runners and it makes good power till 5500 but pulls to 6000 without really falling off

i picked up my zz3 for $300 but i did have missing rocker arms, pushrods, gaskets and head bolts. since its already apart im rebuilding it. new bearings and rings i hope is all it needs, might even get a valve job too, might as well right?

WARNING!!!!!! GM rings and bearings prices were $1,200

Re: ZZ3 for a 89 bird

jbssbw when you go look at the engine to be sure its a zz3 the first thing to look for is the aluminum heads, bring a magnet easiest way to tell if someone painted the heads, and on the passenger side of the block up front theres a little platform and ZZ3 should be stamped in for ID. on my zz3 block i brought a reference book to help figure out what it would be and i didnt find anything on a zz3 in it and none of the blocks numbers matched anything in my book, so thats how you'll know its the real deal

Re: ZZ3 for a 89 bird

hey bandit
bearings and rings are the same for any small block 350
and I figured id price up every part you could need as long as you had the block and heads and rotating assembly
might I add also that you should always update the zz3 springs to the lt-4 ones gm even has a bulletin on it so ill add in those prices aswell
main bearings http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...make/chevrolet 15 bucks

rod bearings http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...make/chevrolet 15bucks

ring set
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...9231/overview/ 199

head gasket
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12557236 48 for both

head bolts
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-es72856 31 for both heads

pushrods
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...1041/overview/ 35 set of 16

rocker arms
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...5490/overview/ 66 set of 16 with nuts and pivot *****

intake gasket
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-ms93317 13

valve cover gasket
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fe...make/chevrolet 13

timing cover gasket
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...make/chevrolet 6

oil pan
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rn...t/model/camaro 48

oil pan gasket
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fe...make/chevrolet 18

rear main seal housing in case yours is missing
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...t/model/camaro 21

rear main seal/gasket for housing
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fe...make/chevrolet 17

valve seals
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fe...make/chevrolet 15

fuel pump block off plate and gasket
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...make/chevrolet 4

that's 564 from summit even with paying 300 that's only 864 for a pretty decent street engine

GET THESE the zz3 spring dampeners snap on the exhaust springs and can snap the valve spring and they slice up the seals ask me how I know also gm has a bulletin about this very issue
lt4 springs
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12495494 44 set of 16

lt4 valve spring retainer
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-19171528 15

lt4 spring seat/shim
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-10212809 31 for 16

so 954 and you have like new engine I figured doing this for you would make it easier for you
that's still less then what you would have got bearings and rings for
also felpro offers a head gasket that is thinner then the gm one it will up the compression to zz4 spec optional idea
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fe...make/chevrolet

also just for s#%ts and giggles
crank
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...6307/overview/ 936

rods
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...5071/overview/ 296

piston
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...9103/overview/ 360 set of 8

113 heads/zzz-zz4
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12556463 635 each 1272 pair
fastburn http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...make/chevrolet 1000 each 2000 pair

block
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...5123/overview/ 840

zz4 short block
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...1723/overview/ 2646

roller lifter kit
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...1042/overview/ 248

cam options
zz3/4 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...make/chevrolet 240
lt4 hot http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...2586/overview/ 219

ya so sorry I was really bored

and you can build a zz4 for 4406 using the shortblock / cam lifter kit/ and heads but its a bit pricey

honestly the parts you need for yours bandit are the cheaper parts but if you already have the engine tore down you should just get the lt4 hot cam kit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12480002 629
and just ditch the tpi for stealth ram http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wnd-7540 367
and fuel rail http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-534-186 $267.95
and then you have a copy of friend of mines old engine that was a beast
he is selling it btw http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/pts/4523876408.html

yes once again sorry I was very bored and couldn't sleep

I'm the one with the motor he is talking about. My 355 lt4 hotcam hsr motor put down 335/353 at the tires with a mild tune.

thank you for all the parts numbers but i have everything but the bearings and rings but i already had all the part numbers i needed. i got all the gaskets in a set for the ZZ# and fastburn crate engine from Chevrolet Performance from Pace Performance. i also upgraded to 4340 chromoly steel rocker arms 1.5 ratio and comp cam pushrods. i still might do a stealthram and/or LT4 hot cam kit (i want to) and/or fastburn or etec heads, but its more than likely going to be a stock tpi zz3
