Neither a Short or Tall Deck BBC fit well...
(Headers especially)
But the Tall Deck Engines are definitely worse.

That thing is NOTHING LIKE "putting an ENGINE into a CAR". It's more like, "wrapping a CAR around an ENGINE".

I had a standard deck oval port BBC in my car and it fit fine but like said earlier the exhaust options are not great. I had Lemons make me some tri-Y headers that ran down the tunnel like a set of SBC long tubes would. But after all that you'll still have to use a wheezy intake to clear a stock hood. If you don't mind a cowl then you can get a proper intake and let the engine breath more.
Honestly, a BBC is rather silly unless you build a drag car and get happy with using a cowl hood. If you want a fast car that can corner then get a stroker aluminum SBC or LS engine. The LS engine will fit under a stock hood unless you want a single plane intake.

A lousy picture for trying to see engine install detail, but it shows you a Rat can fit in quite nicely, and look fairly stock doing it.

My tall deck 555 fits fine with 4” cowl and motor plates and custom fabbed headers.
a tall deck can get you 632” and 900-1000 hp all motor easily for a streetable machine
a custom sheet metal intake would be needed for stock hood clearance and im not sure how much room there is with stock hoods

Re: What is the largest engine 3rd gens can take?
Before having to move the Cylinder-Bore Centers (via an Aftermarket Cylinder Block)...
As Orr89Rocz just said; with the very last 0.025 (Cylinder-Bore diameter) of an Inch, of safety (Cylinder-Wall thickness)...
638 Cubic Inches is as Big as things can get (BBC GM Tall-Deck Cylinder-Block).
Aftermarket BBC Cylinder Blocks are another story...
Depending on the Manufacturer, 900+ to 1,000+ Cubic Inches are on the table!
