Final answer for Edelbrock TES vs. SLP vs. Hookers

Ok, why are Edelbrock TES's so bad? Who has switched from TES to anything else (SLP, Hooker, other) and what were the before and after timeslips/dynos? I really want to get some Hooker Super Comps, but need proof as to why the TES suck so bad to justify the $580 for the new headers, plus y-pipe.

The March 1998 issue of GM HIgh-Tech perfomance had a '91 z28 running 11.40's @ 116 mph n/a with 1 5/8 edelbrock shorties.

Does anyone have that issue to verify that above?

Were those their original 2-primary sizes design?

I doubt anyone would disagree that Hooker and SLP know what they're doing. Edelbrock seems to have been looking more at getting something out there that would be an improvement over stock that the average Joe could afford.

But, I can't answer your question directly, because all I've had are stock and these Hookers. If I was planning a package like you've got, I'd think I'd go with the SLP 1-3/4" primaries. Or, perhaps longtubes if emissions isn't a factor. That's based on information I've seen about the various products and what people have said on this board only, of course. The direct comparison you're seeking isn't likely from the hobbiest, and magazines won't do it because they don't want to risk making one of their advertisers look bad.

I made the switch from Edelbrock to SLP 1 3/4 a couple of years ago and I think it actually hurt me...I used to trap 108 with the Edelbrocks, then went to the SLP's with no other changes and trapped at 106 at Carlsbad Raceway (sea level). Granted the weather conditions were different and I had some tuning issues to fix, but I really don't think the SLPs made any difference.

One thing in favor of SLPs....the quality and construction of the headers and the Y pipe are much better than Edelbrocks. And I never had a fitment problem either the SLPs or Edelbrocks.

Not saying Edelbrock's suck as bad as everyone says, cuz I've seen some quick times from Edelbrock and SLP headers. But I wouldn't spend time and money to switch from one shorty header to another. If I had to do it all over again (and most likely will), I would've gone to Hooker LTs and custom Y pipe instead.

Bottom line, skip the SLPs and go straight to Hooker LTs.
