Mustand Sounds Better?

Hey,
Me and my bro are looking for a good looking mustang for his ProJect car, and every time some one that has Exhaust it sounds NICE. i have headers and Dynomax Y-Pipe w/ a Flowmaster (80).
i have a 5.0 my question will it sound better when i get a 350? i spent alot of money for my exhaust and i really want it to sound like some of those mustangs. Is it because thier's is True Duals? If so is there a recipe for a true dual exhaust system w/ all the part numbers? Thanks.

p.s

i have a minor leak on my 7th cylinder. is that part of the reason its not as deep and loud?
I dont think so Just Thought i would ask.

I agree with the first part. However, the 350 will sound a bit deeper than the 305 does. The larger bore makes up for that a little bit.

So I'm not the only one, huh? Actually, I have heard a few camaros that sound as good as, if not better, than a Mustang at idle. But those had big cams and something like 40 series flowmasters. I just don't like the high pitch that many flowmasters have at high RPM on our cars.

Mustangs have a different style exhaust (dual), different firing order, and different motor all together. That is why they sound different. Power makes for good sound. There are plenty of single exhaust LT1 and LS1 cars that sound incredible.

Another fan of the mustang tone here.

Tone depth (bass) is very relevant to how short the outlet pipe is off the muffler and how close the muffler is to the motor.

The duals, h-pipe and muffler placement is what gives a mustang it's sound more so than the firing order.

I've heard pleantly of older GM cars that sound like mustangs but, the way the exhaust is able to be routed on them (older GM cars) is nearly identical, too.

I've gotten very close with my setup. Next muffler, if I ever get my p.o.s. back together, should have the tone, flow and quietness I am wanting.

Could just be my opinion though..

i would have to agree with you guys. the mustangs have alot better of a sound. not that sound has anything to do with performance but i always turn my head when i hear a 5.0 or a 4.6 with pipes.

yeah.. i dunno i have 2.5" pipe guy at work has a 72 camaro and he has 3" duals w/ flowmasters. he told me my problem was i dont have 3" pipes. This True? Can you get a nice loud sound from a 350 w/ the pipes we have? I Hear alot of Ls1's and LT1's around here and they sound MEAN. How can i get that?

I just welded a 3" flowmaster on my ypipe where the cat goes until I can build my system. That 3" flow has a lot deeper tone than my 2.5" flows did before. I've always known that bigger exhaust pipe gives a lower tone, but it seems be a fairly significant change. Or heck, just run 1.5" pipes with 5" echo tips and listen to that sweet high pitched rap all day long. All you'll need is a camaro brush guard!

Mustangs sound alot different mostly because their engines are different from ours. The 4.6 liter engine is an SOHC (not talking cobra engines), low displacement, low power engine (although it makes more than most thirdgens stock vs stock). Their exhaust is routed totally differently (true duals) and most people do an X-pipe as well.

Yes a 350 will sound different from a 305 if it's making more power. Power makes noise, displacement changes tone. IMO.

Personally I think mod motor mustangs can sound okay, but they still sound like sh*t compared to a 350 SBC.

5.0s sound better than 4.6s imo. They propably sound their best with LTs, no cats, X-pipe and good mufflers.

I'll take my LT1's song over that of a Mudstain any day.

they sound better mostly because the have true dual set up. which alows the exhaust to flow a lot better rather than it being all compacted into one pipe say for instance if you take two fast flowing lanes and try to merg them into one it gonna be total chaos if you keep the line seperate the flow is better and alot more smooth! Try finding someone who will do tru duals i know there is this one place here in dallas that has ther own special setup for duals on third and 4th gen but it ran about 400

the sound has alot to do with the motor too. DIfferent bore/stroke combo, compression, cams, all have an affect on the sound.

IMO they all sound the same, and thus, not appealing at all.

i agree. my buddy has got a really nice mustang that runs high 12's and its a sweet car. its got bbk longtubes with off road x pipe and bassani cat back. At idle it sounds sweet cause of the cam but when he drives it u cant tell the difference between his mustang and some other 5.0. My friends always know its me when i drive by cause my 3'' flowmaster catback is so distinct.

I like how you can say all Mustangs sound alike and then say that your Flowmaster on a thirdgen is distinct

I can agree that many of them sound very similar though. Just a bit ironic that you can say a thirdgen with Flowmaster sounds distinct is all.

Mustangs sound sweet! I'm changing my Flowmaster 80 series for a Magnaflow along with a resonator. I'm looking for a deeper cleaner sound. Mustangs will still sound better though

Dual pipe over single affects the sound more than anything.

Because a low power, single exhaust car with a muffler that tries to make it sound powerful, does indeed sound... distinct.
Just like 4cyl cars with 5" outlet mufflers.... distinct...
distinct sound doesn't = good sound

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder though...

can a normal header, no cat w/ 2.5 pipes and a Flowmaster sound deep and agressive (Stand Out) on a 5.7?

or am i thinking of those cars w/ True duals? or 5.7 w/ 3" pipes.
