exhaust/headers question

To start: Hello.. First post here..

now that is outa the way , I did search a lil bit on the boards and did not find this exact question, sorry if it is located elsewhere or common knowledge.

My question is; are all shorty headers the same measurements?

meaning if I bought let's say eddlebrock shorties, could I just tell the clerk at the auto store " headman shorties Y pipe please" and not have hime ask me what the measurements are?

see I just bought some shortie headers on ebay pretty cheap and need to know how big of an issue it is about to be for me to get the correct Y pipe.

You'll most likely need to buy the y pipe that matches the headers you bought or else have a shop make you one.

I'll do what everyone else on here does...buy the hooker 2055's and the matching y-pipe if your gonna get headers. I went with the hedmans, because I got a great deal on them and they were Jet Hot Coated, and after the hassle of making the y-pipe fit, it cost me just as much as the Hookers.

Slight issue...

The headers are paid for already.. and brand name so far.. is unknown.
So the option of buying more headers is not the most apealing choice right now..

I am on a tight budget or I would have already opted for the headman headers already.or a whole other car..

and for
Chr1s46536 .. thanks , I have been fearing that you are right.. who knows maybe I can get something pretty cool done.. thank you.

What headers did you get?...If you don't know the name brand post a pic. and I'm sure they can be identified by some one on here.
Good luck,
Mike

I contacted (or at least attempted to so far.... only been a couple minutes) the seller and asked him to send me any part number he has if he does not know the brand.

Man,,,headers have always been a problem over the years for me and my friends. My first set I bought for my 68 GTO gave me fits. And that was back in 1983. My buddy and I have busted many a knuckle on his Fords thru the years. My latest escapade was with my Formula. Got a set of SLPs with the Y-pipe. The y-pipe was too wide. Slp said don't worry. Not. Ended up cutting an inch or so out of the pipe to make the width thinner. Good thing my father had access to a welder. Better yet,,,he knew how to weld stainless too.

Those look like Flowtech headers to me. They aren't bad for a fairly stock motor, but won't keep up with the bigger sets from Hedman, Hooker, or SLP (among others). They will give a noticeable boost in performance.

The main problem I hear about with those headers is that the flanges are made of thinner-than-usual metal, so theres a much better chance of them warping and/or leaking. I haven't used them myself though, so I don't know from experience.

I agree.....if they have been used you will more than likely play hell trying to get them to line up on your motor. They are better than manifolds, but with the cost of a y pipe etc.you'd be better off reselling them on ebay/ asking the seller if you can call the deal off.......you can do it with out any neg. feed back and save up for some quality headers.
Good luck,
Mike

well. as it turns out.. they are flowtech... I guess the Y pipe for those are a dime a dozen and pretty easy to locate... from the way everyone talks here.

If you are going to use them, just buy the Y-pipe... they aren't expensive, and odds are, it will be a better fit than 99% of the mufflers shops out there could manage.

Where at in Texas are you? I'v lived in Texas most of my life (except the 8yrs I was in the Marines).I have a friend in Central Tex. that owns an exhaust shop that could hook you up for way less than that.I also know several palces/friends all over Texas.Let me know where you live and I'll see what I can come up with.
Good Luck,
Mike
