New Headers, old cat, sounds like CRAP?

Ok so I had some junk headers I was trying to put on my car, they absolutely would not seal so I went and got some Headmans. This is on a 92 LO3 btw

The 68470's are on and appear to be sealing I also used the corresponding Y pipe. All my smog stuff was removed (please no hate messages) and I plugged my old 3 way Cat's air hook up. (I have a new 2 way to put on but need a new muffler ect) But my car sounds like ***. Kind of like there is a leak but not so much of a tapping noise, it's more of a higher pitched exhaust sound. Somewhat like an older car. I can't find a leak anywhere, it's not smoking, and it doesn't smell like exhaust. The car sounds normal when in park and when you rev the engine (sounds pretty damn good too) but when your in drive and there is a load on the motor the sound comes back. All bolts are tight, I doubled up some felpro metal core gaskets, re tightened bolts over and over. Head is not warped.. can't figure anything? Is it just supposed to sound like crap with the old cat (yes it is the ORIGINAL)? Or is there a small leak that only presents itself when there is a load on the motor? HELP!!

The presence/absence of a catalytic converter can alter the exhaust note. However, having one doesn't usually make it sound like crap. I mean, I have one, and I think my system sounds badass. (There is a bit of popping as the RPM's come down, as you can hear in my sig link, but that is due to a few small leaks from rust by the muffler) Alot of members, as well as people around me that I know still have factory cats and don't seem to have problems.

What catback system are you running? This will probably have the most effect on the way your exhaust sounds.

Its a custom bent pipe with a flowmaster muffler, it sounded good with the factory exhaust manifolds on there. I was more curious since I deleted the air and plugged the port on the cat, didn't know if that would make any difference. Guess I still have a leak somewhere?

I'm pretty sure it is not because of your cat and lack of AIR equipment. That doesn't have an effect on exhaust really, all the AIR system does is pump oxygen into the exhaust to balance out emissions.

I guess just check more thoroughly that you have no leaks. Although if you did have a leak all it would really do is give you an annoying ticking noise, not a crappy exhaust tone.

I posted a while back when I put my headers on too, it almost like a hier pitched hiss right? Me has this too and I have NO leaks. Guys on here told me its just the sound of the headers.

Re: New Headers, old cat, sounds like CRAP?

I was kinda thinking... non resonated headers + better flowing exhaust before the cat + clogged *** old cat = more back pressure = turd exhaust sound. All I could come up with. I played with them a little tonight and loosening them up does make a definate leak appear then let them cool tightened up a bit, heated them up let cool and snugged them up and leak sound goes away.. still sound weird though?

Re: New Headers, old cat, sounds like CRAP?

hollow out the cat, see what you get, sounds like a back pressure issue, have any performance loss? i had my old exhaust sytem on the car when i swapped a stock LG-4 to a modded 350 and the filters in the cat fell apart and choked the car till it almost died under throttle. i bought a 87 GTA exhaust from the manifold back including a flowmaster 80 series with a gutted cat for ten bucks, it sounds really good (esp for flowmaster)

Yup just some unresinated pipes and probaby alot of back pressure as well. Starting to sound better but still a little high. A two way cat and a 3" all the way back should help though
