Tailpipe change
Ok, I have a Flowmaster 80 series catback that the last owner put on. The 2.5 pipes coming out from the muffler go up at an angle like stock in order to exit below the rear bumper, but not be seen. Then, there are chrome autozone slash cut straight tips on the ends pointing towards the ground that stick out about 3 inches.
My question is if I cut the pipes back toward the muffler and come straight out the back, will it sound better/louder? I know the 80 series sounds good, because from inside and beside the car just revving, it sounds great. As soon as you get behind the car at any more than 5 feet away, it's quiet. I want as loud of a muffler as possible without spending much money. Any ideas would be great.

Re: Tailpipe change
I work at a muffler shop so I deal with questions like these everyday. The question about changing the tailpipes, that wont make much of a difference. I have a 92 RS with a 305, what I did with mine is I built an eliminator pipe for the cat, then I put a IMCO Elite Series muffler which is a Flowmaster with an IMCO stamp on it. With that and some 3" Magnaflow tips my car sounds amazing. Just somethin to look into if you were wanting a deeper tone. I'd start with choppin out the cat first.

Re: Tailpipe change
No it will not particularly be louder.
All you will accomplish is to rust out your back bumper support and make the car reek of exhaust 100% of the time.
Sounds like somebody did a pretty good job of doing it right. I'd recommend against hacking it up just so you can annoy the people around you.
