So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

..I told him they don't exist.

I got a warning this time, but I don't think they will be so kind next time. What's a good exhaust setup that is loud, sounds good, and will keep me in the legal level for noise?

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

Thousands of combo's.....

Pick up a Jegs, Summit, or search the TGO and the internet for bolt on Kits (cat-backs). Ooooorrrrrrrrr, you can come over to the dark side and go Duals like a few of us have done. There's a sticky about it at the top of the page. I will say though, loud generally isnt legal; and you dont even want to lock horns with the smog ***** about your lack of CATS.

Good luck,
Max

None. Anything loud is technically going to be illegal. Although the definition of loud may differ.

I've read the Technical Service Bulletins for ours cars and it seems every V8 firebird/camaro from 82-92 had louder exhaust than usual, i use this excuse with the local law enforces and they buy it. It is true infromation. If you have Alldata or Shopkey program you can print the info out. but as a nice loud and street legal IMO is (headers of your choice) high flow cats, and GMMG chambered exhaust system.

-Rob

p.s. i was never stopped for loud exhaust, i just pulled into a in and out burger where some officers where and as i walk out of my car they just casually ask me questions about my car.

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

Go for 'quality' over 'quantity'... what I mean, is go for a GOOD sound over LOTS of noise. I like the Hooker catback on my '83. Even with the built up 350, the noise level is still very reasonable - only a little louder than my '97 LT1 Z28 with the stock exhaust. But the sound itself is fantastic, very deep growl, and definitely could hear it coming when you put your foot down. But under normal driving conditions, it sounds really good but isn't overly loud.

For the times you do want loud and obnoxious, add a Summit 3" cutout to the system for what... $30? Then its open exhaust.

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

Get a quality exhaust system. Best set up would be headers, high flow cats (if you have emissions in your state) and either a Flowmaster cat-back, or GMMG. Then when you want it really loud, get a cut out like the guy above me said!

Edit: you can go to my for sale link in my sig and listen to the sound clips. It probably only gets revved to about 3 grand.

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

Most performance muffler/exhaust shops will let you test the sound of a couple mufflers if you are buying one at the same time. A couple things you should think about is if you want loud 'crackly' sound, deeper 'booming', or like has been mentioned already, one that will be rumbly at idle and then increase in decibles as you add gas. You should also be aware of how far back you want your exhaust pipes to end. The fastback design of our rear hatches act like a speaker box and the exhaust sound can viabrate throughout the car, sometimes irritatingly so.

Magnaflow makes some freeflowing raspy/booming mufflers that will let your neighbor's know your within two blocks from your house. I chose flowmaster for mine. Have fun! Nitro

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

HA ive been pulled over for my true dual 3" like 4 times lol. exhaust is headman LTs, 3" mandrel into 3" summit xpipe into 3" force mufflers with turndowns. id say its the sexiest sound ive heard on any 3gen. its pretty loud but the xpipe helps with the noise after like 2300rpms. i drive my 86 TA with a 305tpi with a cam and ported heads and has the single outlet 3" flowmaster exhaust with edelbrock TES headers/ypipe and its nothing compared to my duals. still its louder than stock but i dnt get pulled over. they pull me over for my duals bc it just sounds like im going faster at any speed bc u can hear the increase in RPMS lol literally. i loveeeee it!

its all about your taste, to me a true dual exhaust is a whole new animal compared to single ypipe configs, if you want quiet then get a stock type setup, if u want to be unique and love the sound of a v8 then go duals. the cop said the only reason my duals is illegal is that the exhaust tips dont go over the rear axle or have to exit behind the doors, of course he didnt see the absence of CATS. plenty of ppl have duals that exit out the back of the car... just takes more work. but u have to check with local laws about decible ratings for cars. every county has diff requirements. most of the cops that pull me over are in small towns that have to many cops and have nothing better to do. cop also said he pulls over motorcylces bc they are too loud from the factory.... hes a DOUCHBAG! its only a 50$ ticket anyway

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

My friend recommend I get a Midas house brand called Ravens (spelling?) that are a notch quiter than Borla from what he tells me, but still sound great. He has them on his 86 Monte SS and his 94 z28.

Basically, I want true duals, that are somewhat loud, but I still want the classic muscle car sound. More of a boom than a rasp. I really just need mufflers so when/if I get pulled over again I won't get a ticket.

Also, how do I go about doing cutouts?

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

if midas recomends them... are they stock replacement? if so they'll hurting ur power. same thing as walker probably. mufflers are cheap, summit sells a highflow design that is quieter than all of them but doesnt hurt power.... say it has a classic muscle tone etc. like the turbo mufflers.

they will still pull u over if its too loud, they can get u for the exits of the mufflers not being far enough to the back of the car, or no cats, etc or just make sumthing up about a decibal reading.

cut outs are easy just install before muffler, id say close to the header collectors but where the cutout is in a striaght line so it comes out through the cutout when unbolted. they have motorized ones that are like 300-500$ or cheapies that u have to crawl under and unbolt yourself

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

i think i may know what the original poster is talking about. If so they are knock off flowmaster mufflers that are half cost of a true flowmaster but sound identical. Buddy has a set on his 355 and they are too quiet IMHO.

Im running a 3" edelbrock SDT catback with cat-delete and it rumbles great at idea without being super loud. Same goes for cruising.....that is until you slam the gas petal down, that is when the SBC responds with its thunderous voice

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

Ok i guess this would be a good place to post this. Im looking at getting a full new exhaust. I was hoping to just get some hooker shorty headers with y-pipe and toss on a Series 80 muffler at the end of the y-pipe. Now my questions is, Would that suffice to keep the BLUES off my back?

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

yea i heard good things about the edelbrock catback. i would have went with them if i had a stock setup over a flowmaster.

the 80series is a high flow stock replacement by flowmaster. it needs to be mounted in the stock location. if u were to go with the hooker shorties and ypipe and then got a flowmaster catback say the american thunder, or force 2 setups they are legal in all 50states replacement. they flow good enough for 400hp and will give your car a more aggressive tone. they wouldnt be able to pull u over for the setup persay.... but for the decible reading they might or just say u floored it for the infamous ticket "exhibition of performance" which means if u gun it or if your car sounds like ur accelerating too fast they can pull u over and write u a ticket for your car sounding like its going too fast.

Lmao yeah i got one of those tickets when the bird was just a V6. I even told the judge that and he dropped the ticket. I told him it was an unmodified V6, so how would i go that fast. Anyway, thanks for the info. Quick question. Any of you know where i could find simple small replacement parts for the bird/camaro? I need that plastic cover on the winshield wiper motor. Buddy pushed the motor alittle to far when removing it and it cracked the plastic.

Yeah it does but the part costs $70. and the motor is still good. Just has a crack on the plastic so it isn't water proof anymore.

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

I found quite a few exhaust audio clips for our cars on U-Tube. They're pretty good for comparisons.

I had a Trans Am style 1970 Cuda as my first real car. I hung a midas muffler off the back with bailing wire so it looked visually legal. Then I had duel dumps about midway down. I'd get pulled over for speed but never once was I questioned about the noise. I made sure the 'Midas' stamped name visually showed if you got close enough to look. Just a thought..... Nitro

Damn i like the sound of that 1bad. Where did you get the custom y pipe? Just wish i had the fundage to put my TPI system on the TBI 350 i got sitting here about to go in. And does that y-pipe work well with a cat back exhaust. Also do you still have a cat on that?

I've run open header for a year now without a ticket, knock on wood. I guess it depends on your local law enforcement. Depends on the use of the car too, for me its just a toy for fun, so loud is good, if I had to drive it to work every day, it might get old.

This will explain my setup in more detail...

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/exha...t-2210s-t.html

I work for a local speed shop on the side (part time job when I have spare time), me and my boss there made the y-pipe.

Point being, a setup like mine should be loud enough for him......

Yet again that is a beautiful setup. I wish i could find someone that could make that y-pipe that lives nearby. Just kinda getting discouraged by my huge list of parts that i need for the completion of my bird. Maybe i'll just have to see about putting the TPI on. Too much BS to switch everything to TBI. May just cost the same in order to do the TBI lol. Anyway, Thanks alot for the info and that is one BEAUTIFUL car.

thats a big setup. dual 3"? into a 3.5" ypipe? not bad. looks goob but idk if u could lower it too much from what i can see from the side pic as far as clearance. thats the cleanest underbody ive ever seen tho lol ur lucky. mines got more rust repair spots than original metal/paint lol

IMHO, nothing beats the sound of long tube headers, true dual pipes and Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Classic musclecar thunder.

How do I go about getting cutouts? If I had them, it wouldn't matter really what type of exhaust I got because i could just flip the switch and be running open headers.

Re: So the police officer asked me if there was a malfunction with my mufflers...

u can get them anywhere. summit, jegs, pypes. etc. they are sumwhat cheap if they arent electric. and it does matter what exhaust u have bc u wouldnt run the car with open headers all the time. u would still want a good exhaust, unless u want CR@P hp/tq until u open the cutout. anyother words u still want to have the power to have fun and not get harrassed for the loudness. then when u want it full out u just open the cutout.... the cutout basically allows u to run a quieter exhaust with more restriction for a sleeper look/sound. and have the ability to open the cutout for all out performance. u can use a crap exhaust but u will miss out on the HP/tq when ur just driving around.... so that doesnt make any sense.

and i agree nothing sounds better than true duals. no single exhaust thirdgen sounds near as good as mine

i was gonna upgrade my exhaust to 3in pipe after a v6 v8 swap cuz i wanted it loud but i just ended up leavin the quiet flowmaster back there and adding a electric cutout. I love crusin thru town all loud lol, and its very convenient to flip the switch and just quiet down especially if you see a cop

Just remember, when you have open headers, it will mess with your carb or fuel injection, which ever you have, fuel injection is more forgiving. With a crab the car starts really hard and sometimes runs kind of crappy depending on your air/fuel mixture. Also if you get the bolt on plugs you have to crawl under the car and unbolt them, and after awhile you can't unbolt them no more. There is also warlock muflers that have a cut out, there made by Flowtech. The best way is the eletric cut outs, that you can hit a switch and open up the headers. There is a good Kit made by quick time performance, there about $150 single and $300 duels. Good luck i say:

AMEN.. my exhaust is only a bit quieter than open headers but the police here are a lot more lenient.. they just seem to pull up, look at me, smile and drive off and pull over an import down the road for their exhaust..
