Ok so i drive a '91 Camaro RS, stock exhaust. Was thinking about buying an electronic cutout for my exhaust which would run me about $170. Its an easy cut and weild to me, think its worth it? Lot meaner sound than stock i believe. Took the muffler off just to hear it ( Put it back though ). And im going with the electronic incase i need to switch back to stock exhaust.

Depending on where you put it, you'll like it. Let me tell you from first hand experience, not having the option to make the car quiet will make a lot of neighbors and friends angry at some point. However, if you can just flip a switch and go from loud to quiet, you're golden. Of course, I would suggest buying some headers, and then having the cut out right after them, but either way will get you loud exhaust with some mild performance (~5-7hp)

I'm putting it right in the center of the car where the two clamps are and the pipe connector is.

Here are a few pics of 3" E-cutout. I put it right after the Y-pipe (where the cat would go)




Be careful where you put it, Make sure you have good ground clearance. Of course if you are sicking with stock exhaust you may not have to worry as much.

Open exhaust on a stock 305/TBI will make the car "r i c e y". All show, no go.

Just put on a good muffler which gives good sound. Open exhaust isn't gonna give enough HP to justify the cost of the cut-out.

Right now i could care less about how fast it goes. I know it wont give me power, im just shooting for better sound than stock exhaust. Costs less than the flowmasters im planning to buy later on. Let alone possibly shooting for a 350 crate engine in 4-6 months.

correct me if im wrong guys, but if he does buy one for his car now (small anemic piping) , wouldnt he have to buy a larger diameter one if he does get a catback later on down the road?? why buy the same part twice? save urself some money and hassle and just get a good cat back first.

I have a cutout on my car, and its not the kind of sound you want on the roads. Its so loud. The only time I open it up is for the track, other than that its closed

It will be a nice deep tone, but get's annoying after a while.

Obviously he isn't worried about HP, but sound.

It will sound great. I had a manual cutout on my car, got lots and lots of compliments on how it sounds. I've since replaced the manual cutout with a McCord electric cutout, also relocated it as well.

Flowmaster has been shown to flow worse than a stock z28 catback from the ls1 cars. If you are going to run a cutout anyway just leave the stock exhaust on. If you want slightly better flowing for the times it will be closed, get a stock ls1 catback as the piping is slightly larger than what our cars got AFAIK.

As for loudness, I have driven my car with an open cutout with stock manifolds and cats, shorties and a high flow cat, and without a cat at all and it was never too loud or annoying. Also drove my 94 z28 with long tubes, an open off road y pipe and a 230/244 duration cam and it wasn't even loud. I would suggest an electric cutout though when funds allow that way if you aren't in the mood to attract attention, you can close it with the flip of a switch.
