Yet Another Exhaust Sound Question

I have a 91 Formula 350. Right now it has a cam, edelbrock headers (), no cats and a flowmaster muffler. I like the sound, but I don't like the infamous drone on the highway or that I feel like I should take my foot off the gas when I pass a cop (or being nervous when I have one right behind me).

I am changing to Dyno Don's headers and Magnaflow high flow cats, but am stuck on the catback system.. I did read the sticky but I'm not sure if mine is the kind of setup that I'm going to be disappointed in the Magnaflow sound. Some Magnaflow clips I have found I really liked at both idle and revving, while others were waay too weak sounding. I could not find a sound clip with an engine setup close to mine with the cats on. I want it to sound quietly aggressive at idle.. and mean when moving, just not as conspicuous as what I have now.

I guess it's stupid to buy Magnaflow just because I love the look of the tips. But is it more stupid to buy Borla for the adjustable sound, and then stick different tips on it? And is Borla easier to install, generally? Thanks for any advice here..

Re: Yet Another Exhaust Sound Question

your doing the right thing. you could run a dual 24 inch chambered exhaust where the muffler goes and it would be nice.
ask don he has forgotten more than we know and he can fill you in.
im a fan of chambered exhausts so i like the sound.

Re: Yet Another Exhaust Sound Question

I bought my Magnaflow for these reasons.

1.) Price, got mine for $315 to my door.
2.) Full Stainless Steel
3.) Totally new system just for us 3rd Gen Drone H8'ers.
4.) Quiet at idle and screaming at WOT when it counts. Best for driving past cops or coming home late.
5.) It's not a Flowmaster

P.S. Borla was my original choice, but then Magnaflow just came out with the new 16829 kit so I decided to get them (after a few sound clips of course to better make my decision). After I found it to be quiet at idle and loud as hell at WOT I bought it immediately.

P.P.S. Look for Mr.Brisk's video on youtube, he has a 355 cammed and his Magnaflow sounds so damn sexy. Doesn't sound weak at all, but the Magnaflow video of the Camaro RS is very quiet (but without headers too so think about it)

Re: Yet Another Exhaust Sound Question

Mrbrisks was one of the ones I'd be happy if that's how it came out, but I think both those clips are of ones without cats? I'm going from no cats (hollow) to high flow ones.. isn't that going to cut way back on the sound? There was one but I can't find it now.. of a Firebird with Magnaflow that sounded like my neighbor's pickup at idle I don't want that to happen lol.. it was way too quiet/tame sounding for me..

That's mine. SLP 1 3/4" headers highflow cat, basically stock TPI 350.
I'll have another one of it at wide open on the dyno up shortly.

Re: Yet Another Exhaust Sound Question

here is another thing you can do. when you are in a parking lot and you hear a sound you like - talk to the guy. what man wont talk about his engine sound?
ask what they have and the flow and the engine size.
in the end its what you like that matters, nothing else.
and some people chose sound by engine too.
i know some that swear by the sound of a 327 and only think a 350 is so so.
what ever you like is all that matters.

Re: Yet Another Exhaust Sound Question

The magnaflow sounds good when your in the upper rpms or a wot, but how many times are you going to be at wot. I say go with spintech. It quiet at idle and is loud when you get on the gas. You can just replace the flowmaster muffler with the spintech one and get some magnaflow tips from summit if you love the tips that much.
