Is this hole supposed to be there?
Hi,
I had my muffler sandblasted and powder coated and now I notice a little hole between the two pipes. Did the sandblasting shop do this or does it serve as some kind of drain hole. I hadn't noticed it when the muffler was still rusty but it kinda looks like it's drilled. And off course, there's smoke coming out of it.
As far as I know, it's a stock muffler.

Every stock muffler I've ever seen has that hole. While I have no idea what its for, a drain is a very likely explanation.

They are drain holes, to keep condensation in the muffler from rotting it out from the inside.

I painted the front pipes and the catalytic converter with heat resistant paint that withstands temperatures up to 650 °C.
I measured the max. temperatures on the intermediate pipe, muffler and tailpipes with an infra red meter. At the front part of the intermediate pipe I measured about 120 ° C. Futher rear it was much less. The guy from the powder coating shop told me that temperatures up to 150 ° C are no problem so I let him powder coat these parts.
Because the car is an on going restoration project I only had it running once on idle with the treated parts. So far it held up fine.
