Re: need to make my exhaust louder
The loudest I've found is either a glasspack or a Flowmaster 40 series. I have shorty headers to 2.25" true duals, no cats, to a pair of Thrush glasspacks. My wife hates how loud it is, I love it.
Youtube clip after I finished installing the exhaust:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRzK0Q5Htjo
That was taken with my cell phone, mic on it isnt the greatest.

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
The guy that put the muffler is a friend of mine, and he warned me the flo pro would be too loud. I need to approach him and tell him how wrong he was w/o pissing him off. He runs a good shop, and he has been more than fair with me many times. Is there a way to alter the muffler and weld a cover over it? I don't have the tech to make a sound bite right now.
Honestly, I'm not that familiar with those mufflers. If its a glasspack-type muffler you can try removing the packing material inside. That will usually make them louder.
Do you have turndowns on the end of your exhaust pipes? Those can quiet the exhaust down as well by aiming the sound at the ground instead of straight out the back. Its usually not a big difference though.

Just asking, but you HAVE stood behind the car while someone else rev'd the engine, right? If he's a reputable muffler shop guy/mechanic, he should know what he's talking about. As for modding the muffler, I guess technically you can remove it, cut the top open and remove the baffles inside, then weld it back up. I don't know about the vehicle inspection laws where you are, but in PA that is a BIG no-no.

Best thing would be to just switch mufflers or run an electric cutout. Then you could control when and how loud it is.

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
a flowmaster will be louder if louder is what you want. Or you can run a dynomax bullet muffler or something of that nature. you can run a flowmaster single chamber 6 inch case 10 series muffler. that's one of the loudest mufflers you can get. you can also try those new cherry bomb single chamber mufflers...

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
Just today I was on my way home and turned off the stereo to listen to my car run. Its one of the nicest sounds I have ever heard. I love the way my Camaro has that powerful inside and outside the car sound. Its the Flowmaster American Thunder 3in. Cat.back with 80 series muffler and 3in.tips. Most ether love it or hate it. My opinion is obvious and I have no problem hearing it.

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
get a set of cut outs. a loud exhaust is cool for about 3 months. Then it gets real annoying not being able to talk to friends without yelling in the car, not being able to listen to music with out it blasting it, or trying to keep a straight face when a cop sitting next to you at a stop light.
more then likely the exhaust is pretty loud already or your cat is clogged and is acting like a 2nd muffler. either way a cut out will solve your problems because it dosent get much louder then a straight pipe with a dump , and when your ears start ringing you can quite her down

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
I love the way the 80 series sound as well. If they had one that would have worked with my true duals, I would have used it. I had one on the Camaro when it had the V6 and when I first swapped to the V8 and I loved the way it sounded.

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
On my 1st 3rd gen, a 92 RS. 305/TBI/T5....
I cut the muffler off, continued the exhaust straight out the passenger side for just a single tip on that side.
Sounded great, cops never bothered me. Cat quiets the sound enough that I never got in trouble, but it was loud/sounded good.

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
Not tricky at all. It would end up just like my current cat-back. Just a y-piece & a piece of straight pipe.

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
The "bulge" you see in the pic, above the words is the bullet muffler that is used on that cat-back.
What I did to mine years ago, was to keep the cat & delete the muffler. Delete both & it would definitely get louder.

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
I fixed it. 1 Magnaflow 2-way CAT (technically this is illegal since i no longer have a smog pump or the tubing, but my tail pipe tests were very clean & they didn't notice the missing smog pump) & 1 Magnaflow MUFFLER. Not 2 mufflers.
#37
Re: need to make my exhaust louder
Ohhhh I get it now. Ridiculous that has to be illegal. The smog pump really was a way to "fool" the system by pumping good air into the cat to get "lower" emissions. What you have now probably is better in regard to emissions since the cat is probably better quality than the original one. In Michigan there is no emissions testing, so some of us have misplaced our cats.

Stevolwevol, Sorry to hear the shop said your stuck with it.Sounds like one of those bight the bullet moments when you realize any of the choices suggested will cost you. Seems to me I would just replace it with a different muffler. The shop should at least work with you and cut you some slack, if they don't I would find another shop. As far as there tips suggestion, that's not cheep to do either and your stuck with a muffler that could still disappoint you.

DO NOT STRAIGHT PIPE!!! It sounds so un clean and to loud and not toned. me and my brother straight piped his camaro and we were so sick of it after a while. if you want a seriously nice exhaust, get a Borla, those systems are seriously legit.

you will have the nicest sound out there

Even with my 50% certificate, it still ends up higher than any other exhaust and double the cost of the cat-back I have already.
Needless to say....Even at 50% off I'm still not going with a Borla cat-back.

Yeah borla can suck the left one for all I care 1000+ for exhaust BS!!!
I still think you should post a video when I first got the exhaust done in my truck (stock manifolds with high flow cat and flowmaster series 40) I thought it was not loud enough but everyone kept saying it was and alarm's would be set off....so maybe it's all in your head and we can tell you

Re: need to make my exhaust louder
The thing I find hilarious about the Borla setup is it's basically a single exit exhaust muffler or muffler exit with straight pipe. You're just paying for the company name and stainless steel IMO.
Pic is of the 4th gens I imagine 3rd gens are the same.
Compared to my 4" catback that I have ~$180 I'll just take the aluminum pipe that might rust a little bit.

Im not a sound expert on weather ss sounds better than chrome or what not but with the $500+ your saving over a borla exhaust you can just get a better muffler imo
