Looking to purchase full exhaust, recommendations wanted

As in the subject, I'm looking to replace the full exhaust on my 85 TA. I had bought some headers on Ebay a few years ago just to get the exhaust functioning, and now it's time to redo the whole thing the right way. I ready the stickies and there's a ton of info, but it's mostly about which catback is better, which cats to use, etc. What I'm looking for, ideally, is a bolt up FULL axle back exhaust, and recommendations about what to buy. I'm not looking to spend a fortune, so under a grand would be best, if possible. Once I've got some ideas and advice, I'll search the sound clips and pick one out, I'm just looking for a place to start. Also, I have a deep sump oil pan on my 350, I don't think that will interfere with routing but it's worth noting. Thanks in advance guys.

If you’re running the eBay long tube headers and you’ve already installed them and the oil pan then a catback exhaust will be of no consequence to that oil pan’s fitment. In fact the only thing to be concerned over fitment with the LT’s would be any kick outs the pan has but even then it seems unlikely. With your $1k budget for exhaust after the headers you can have the best as I don’t know any exhaust system that exceeds that price point. Close but not exceeding. I don’t recommend the Hooker aerochamber catback personally unless you have the mechanical ability to work it. I have it, it’s cheap but the fitment was iffy, modified I made it work.

Re: Looking to purchase full exhaust, recommendations wanted

Thank you for the advice, I will steer clear of the aerochamber.

I have ebay shorties unfortunately, and they say they don't use the same y pipes as other shorties do, but i matched them up exactly to the unknown ones that came out of the car, which were pretty beat up. So my dilemma is, if I can't confirm what Y pipe I can use for these headers, I think I have to replace them instead of guess on fitment, you know?

And I do have a really nice true dual setup on the car currently that the PO installed, would need full sanding and paint, but it's do-able. I'd have to figure out the ground clearance issue, but it could be done I imagine. I doubt any Y pipe setup would flow like a 2.5" true dual, so maybe I'm wasting my time replacing the full exhaust. As you can see, I'm pretty torn on this one haha

I had the Aerochamber on my car and loved it. I switched to Magnaflow back in 2007 to sound different from other 3ed gen Fbodies. Now alot of third gen guys have Magnaflow and dont use Hooker. Ironic

If you have the coin for it, go for the Hooker Blackheart exhaust. A decent exhaust shop can make you a dual cat "y pipe" and use the x pipe back from the above mentioned system. It's quite popular with LS swapped third gens

not talking about the muffler, talking about the entire exhaust system that comes with that muffler. It doesn’t fit well. Hits the upper Panhard Bar, hits the sheet metal separating it from the rear passenger wheel well, mid pipe hangs too low and the muffler sits rather crooked. On my Firebird the tips looked cheap too. They hang too low and are straight instead of following the rear bumper’s lower edge like most systems and are too exposed. I took a few inches out of the mid pipe after it turns up to go over the axle to bring it up closer to the floor pan, built a little plate for the hanger that moves the whole thing over off the body and raises it off the UPHB and replaced the tailpipes with the dynomax stock replacement pieces. I also shortened the driver’s side rubber strap hanger to level the muffler while having the tailpipes tucked like they should be. It sounds ok, everyone says the muffler is quiet but it’s freakin’ loud in my application. If this guy doesn’t want to go through that work to get the exhaust right, he has the money to start with a better system.

min this case if no one sells a y-pipe for those headers, depending on which way the collector is oriented you can have a y-pipe built that won’t interfere with the oil pan. If the driver’s side header points down and forward like most shorty headers do to pass under the oil pan you will have a much more difficult time using that oil pan and maintaining ground clearance for the y-pipe. I’ve been there. I bought 3 different oil pans trying to find one with good capacity and oil control that worked with Dyno Don’s y-pipe that didn’t cost $400 and just ended up using the stock one because none did. Canton’s 242t is the only one I know that fits with stock y-pipe routing that increases capacity. Even most small block stock replacement oil don’t fit with stock y-pipe routing.

Re: Looking to purchase full exhaust, recommendations wanted

I've done 100% of the work on this project myself, with the exception of the windshield, so I'm looking to avoid work that should be done by a shop wherever possible.

Thanks for the info about the oil pans, I have a couple of stock ones kicking around that I can clean up and paint to save me some space. I don't really see the need for the deep sump pan, it's just what came with the motor.

Does anyone know where I could get a set of Dyno Don's headers and Y pipe? I did some browsing yesterday and saw that he stopped doing it, so do I just need to wait for them to pop up somewhere?

Send him a message on the forum, Im ordering a set next Friday. Let me know what you come up with as far as the rest of the exhaust...
