Question about Hedman 68470 Shorties and O2 sensor

These are the shorty headers without the AIR tubes or an O2 sensor. If I order the coated ones, would welding the O2 sensor bung on and drilling a hole do harm to the finish, other than what is apparent, like will breaking the finish in this spot cause it to crack out?

Do any modifying before the coating. It's not so much of a cracking issue, as it is the lack of coating in the welded area. That means you'll have to either order them uncoated, have the O2 bung welded on, then get them coated; or order them with the bung and coated (I don't believe that's a problem - talk to the source from which you intended to get them).

Go Huskers!

Thanks. You're originally from Nebraska, right? I found a place over in Waverly that does ceramic coating, and aside from mailing them to Jet Hot, I think that's the only way I'll be able to get them coated with the O2 bung. I did some research though, and found that the shorty Flowtech's can be ordered ceramic coated from Jeg's for just under $200, and the Y-pipe is another $100. That's almost $100 cheaper than the Hedman setup, but the Flowtechs are only 1.5" primaries. They do, however, already have the O2 fitting welded on. I know Hedman makes good quality equipment, but am not very familiar with Flowtech. Any suggestions? The engine will be LG4 with new cast heads with 1.94/1.50 valves, stock CC q-jet, and XE249 cam. The emissions crap is going into a large box in the attic. Will 1.5" primaries be enough, or would the 1 5/8 be better?

Native, correct. And alum - UNL, BSME '85.

The 1.5" primaries depends upon ID or OD. My Hookers are 1-5/8" OD, which is right at 1-1/2" ID. The Hedmans on the '57, though, are 1-7/8" ID.

From what's been said about Hedman & Flowtech on this forum, sounds like Hedmans are the way to go.

Another option is to put the 02 sensor into the y-pipe right after the collector. That's what I'm going to do when I upgrade to coated headers, since coated headers with an 02 bung but no air crap seem not to exist.

My headman longtube coated headers have no air, but do have O2.

Like Jim said, you can just put the 02 sensor somewhere else if you want. Mine is in the straight pipe that is where the cat used to be. I thought having it that far downstream I would need a heated sensor, but I haven't noticed a bit of difference having it down there. They Y-pipe would work too, especially if you still have a car. We just used this one because he was already fabbing the pipe, might as well not alter anything we didn't have to.

"since coated headers with an 02 bung but no air crap seem not to exist"

Yeah, sucks don't it. That woulda made the project a little easier.

The simplest option here is to buy a set of reducers that have O2 bungs already in them. Walker/Dynomax makes a set for just a little more than the standard reducers and just use the plugs that come with them to plug the side you don't want.

I have 3" to 2.5" reducers that I bought for like $23 locally here. Great deal for the $$$.

either order reducers with o2 bungs, or have a shop weld an o2 bung in one of the sides of the y pipe.. mine heats up fine (OE replacement $12 O2 sensor) and it's located about 3" down from where the Ypipe bolts to the header.

A shop will charge around $20 to install the bung, the bungs cost around $4.

Does anyone have pictures of the o2 sensor installed on y-pipe?

Re: Question about Hedman 68470 Shorties and O2 sensor

i have these headers. i bought them uncoated from summit. they just had black paint on them for preservation so i bought some titanium header wrap. it came with an 02 bung that i had to weld in. Took it to an exhaust shop and works great!
