91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

91 Firebird v6 5 speed, white . Bought the car with no keys as a repo, so I used a resistor to avoid vats, now I cannot figure out how to get the injectors to fire, so for someone who doesnt mind tracing wires, or already knows how to fix it, good deal for you. The clutch disk is worn out, $38, at autozone. Will replace whole clutch for $150.00 more if wanted. The interior is in real good shape, a little dirty, but not undesireable. It has t-tops,, good shape. If anyone has any questions pm me or email me at w_mortell@hotmail.com, put the subject as 91 firebird. I am wanting $1200 for it, but will definately consider a trade.

Re: 91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

There are 15 different resistors ranges that were on these cars. Without pulling the vats box you will need a vats interrogator to read which of the 15 it is. The fuel pump and the starter will not work without the correct code. A locksmith will have to pull the ignition cylinder and cut a key and then use a vats interrogator to read the code. A locksmith will cost from $100-$150. Hope this helps.

Re: 91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

well, I have already pulled the ignition cylinder...and I can get a new one from the parts store for about 65-70 bucks, with 2 keys with it. where do I get a vats interrogator? That would help tremendously.

Re: 91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

If your ignition cylinder is good and you have a cut key don't buy a new cylinder. It will come with a blank cut key with no resistor pallet(also known as a chip) and you will need to know the code stored in your ECM and VATS box. If you have a blank cut key that works in the cylinder with no pallet buying a new cylinder will put you right back in the same spot. I have a VI professional unit that cost $225 shipped. You can get a cheaper type of VI on E-bay or do a Google search for VI for $45- $90 that attached to the blank cut key. Read the way it works on E-bay and Google links. Take the code you get when using the VI and the blank cut key to GM or a locksmith and tell them cut a key like the blank with the code you get. Just did on 2 days ago at the GM dealership it was $21 total.

If you don't have a key for the original ignition cylinder, take it to a lock smith and have him cut one with no resistor pallet. Does your clyinder have the 2 white wires with a small plug at the end?

Re: 91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

yupp...thats the problem I am running in to. I have tried many of the resistances, and I found one that enables the starter relay, but it will not turn on the fuel pump and injectors. real weird...the security light comes on for a couple of seconds, then goes off, but only the starter relay is enabled, NOTHING else....I guess I could try some more resistances, I have a potentiometer on it right now actually, but it goes to about 5k OhMs. Got any ideas other than resistance it might be...I'm still not sure if I am going to mess with it any more, I am going to set it down the street maybe tomorrow, and post a for sale sign on it...So someone else is gonna get a real good deal on a firebird, maybe...it depends on how long it sits and how many calls I get on it...I just dont know man. I gotta get a car or get this one running, If I sell it, I can use it and the money I have as a down on a newer car...know anyone who wants to buy it?

Re: 91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

If the starter engages and turns over the engine, than you got the vats right. Vats disables the fuel pump and the starter. I would check your fuel pump at the fuel pump test connection. Its located on the engine harness next to the firewall connection and the 3 relays mounted on the firewall. Its a single wire with a plug connected to nothing. With the key off run a jumper from the battery to the plug with a 10amp fuse. You should hear the pump come on. If it does come on check your fuel pump relay, if the pump does not come on its probably your pump. Have you checked for any SES codes?

Re: 91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

I have replaced the pump and the pump relay....I can run a switch to the pump to turn it on, but I cant get the injectors to fire it seems like....but I will check that test connection wire, just in case...no I havnt checked for any SES codes, but I probly should though, I used to have the little metal key that you stuck under the dash, but i lost it somewhere along the camaro/firebird journeys that I have had. But I will check it and let you know.

Re: 91 Firebird v6 5 speed (Joplin, Mo)

I tried the jumper from the fuel pump test connection wire, and it turned on...but then I tried to start it, and it will not fire up...just crank with the pump running, no start
