'91 Formula TPI 5 Speed !!!SOLD!!!
1991 Pontiac Firebird Formula - Maui blue. Grey interior. 5.0 T.P.I. 5 speed. 156,000 miles. Power steering, brakes, locks, windows and antenna. T-tops. Cruise. A/C removed. Dual cat. 3.42 posi. Kenwood CD. Original G.M. alarm with both original key fobs. Everything works.
I purchased the car off Thirdgen.org August of '06. Car was garaged since day one and pretty meticulously maintained by the original owner. I am the second owner. It is in pretty good overall condition. There is no rust anywhere. All weatherstripping is in perfect shape. Even the t-top weatherstripping looks new. T-tops do not leak. Interior is in very good condition. Oil changed every 3000 miles since new. I have $2200 in receipts and another $1000+ in other parts that i cant find the receipts for but its obvious that there new parts. Cant find the receipts for stuff like the tires and headers. Which is over $800 right there.
The good. all done in the last year and a half -
8 new SVO 19# injectors
Throttle position sensor, coolant temp sensor, water temp sensor
Cap, rotor, plugs, wires
Edlebrock T.E.S. headers with A.I.R. tubes
Flowmaster 17150 exhaust. 3" intermediate pipe. Single 3" outlet on drivers side
B&M Ripper shifter
Ebay cold air kit with a K&N filter
2 new catalityc converters
Remaned computer
Hypertech thermo master chip
Hypertech fan switch
Hypertech 160* thermostat
G.M. O2 sensor
Lokar flexible oil dipstick
M.S.D. Blaster coil
Proform shift light
4 B.F.G. G-Force KDWS 245/50/16
Front brake rotors
Front brake pads
Air condioning bypass pulley
Coolant overflow tank
Dome light cover
Passenger head light motor fixed ( went up and down on it's own when the lights were on when i got the car. Both light motors operate perfectly )
Formula throttle body cover
I'm sure i'm missing some stuff. The original owner had the struts, shocks and a few other odds and ends done in 2001 at the dealer he bought the car from. All work done on the car by him was from the dealer he got it from. All work done while i've owned the car done by me exept the headers, tires and Cats.
The bad -
Paint is original. As you can see from the pics the car looks good. The paint is starting to peel on the roof on both sides of the t-tops. Fenders, doors, trunk, quarter panels and hood look good. Rear wing is starting to fade slightly. As i said there is no rust. But unforts the body isnt perfect. The original owner backed the car into a wall after washing it one day. Mangleing the driver side quarter panel a little right next to the tail light. This also pushed the quarter panel a little out of wack. Kinking it slightly by the gas cap. As you can see from the pics it's really not noticeable. But it is there. I am complimented daily on the car. Literally. So it's more of an eye sore to me than those that see the car. Even the original owner decided not to fix it. Which kinda surprised me.
It needs a windsheild. A small chip has now become a crack from drivers side to passenger side.
E-brake stopped working recently
The conclusion -
As i said the car is quite nice. Not perfect. But with 156,000 miles and spending 15 years of it's life in Brooklyn, NY it was a rather nice find. Engine, trans and rear are all original. The clutch, also original, grabs well but will need to be replaced eventually. I took the car to Englishtown once last year and could feel the clutch not quite grabbing as it should, but a year later it is still holding up fine. There are a few typical rattles but no creaks. Does not creak or rattle when pulling up a driveway or parking lot. Quite solid all around. With 135,000 miles and messed up timing it went 14.8 @ 92.5 stock. Havnt ran it since i did all the stuff to it. The car originally had air conditioning. I removed all but what sits in front of the radiator. A leak test showed that just about everything was leaking. It just made life easier to remove it, be it alot warmer in the car unforts. Hey, thats what it has t-tops for. I have all the original paperwork for the car. Build sheet, window sticker, pretty much everything he had he gave me from when he bought the car.
Looking for $2700 OBO

Re: '91 Formula TPI 5 Speed
I had it for sale 2+ months ago on here for $3000. But no bites. $2700 was more along the lines of what the few peeps interested seemed to wanna spend. I live about an hour and 20 minutes from Philly. I used to work in Trenton, NJ which is an hour from me.

Some close ups of the quarter panel and the front seats. The seat covers have been on the car for over 12 years. The seats are perfect.

When i looked up touch up paint for a '91 there was no quasar. Maybe it's considered Ultra blue. Those were the only 2 blues listed ( Ultra and Maui) .

Yikes...I seem to have hit a nerve. Since most forum members are not able to view cars in person, they make decisions on posted photos. I politely asked for some current photos....you indicated they were currrent...I guess that was not the case. In my experience cars generally do not look the same after 2.5 years of average driving...
Surprising, without knowing my intent, you'd respond in such a way. However, I will take your advice and "move on".
Again, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers and I still wish you good luck with the sale.

Re: '91 Formula TPI 5 Speed
If you're open to trades, I have a '95 Formula that I am thinking of getting rid of. It was a great daily driver up until Christmas Eve, when it lost the 3-4 shift on the trans. I can get a quality rebuilt trans from a builder on LS1tech.com for about $1000 shipped, but I don't have time to install one anytime soon. It's a $4000 car with the trans fixed, but I value it at $2500 as it sits with the tranny problem. That'd also be with the stock wheels. If you're interested, let me know.

Re: '91 Formula TPI 5 Speed
Hello, I originally asked if you were interested in trading. I have an 86 Iroc. It has the 350 TPI. I have a fresh rebuilt 700 to go in it, but not installed yet. (plan to install later this week). I have 5k in reciepts in the motor. The car runs extremely well (except for not having 3rd or OD) All the TPI is aftermarket from TPIS.It has 186 cast heads with 2.02/1.60 valves, screw in studs, guide plates, roller rockers, the motor has been balanced, with all documentation and reciepts. If interested let me know and I will give more details and send pics. thanks!!!

Re: '91 Formula TPI 5 Speed
Let's see....
You stated the last time you ran this car at the track it had "messed up timing" it has a clutch issue you have noticed in the past - the term "eventually" is pretty vague - it has 156,000 miles, needs a new windshield, the e-brake doesn't work, and the paint is beginning to show its age in alot of typical spots. On top of that there is a dent in it. It doesn't matter if a dent is visible from a certain distance in a pic, it is still a dent that detracts from the value of the car; dents cost money and/or time to take care of. And on top of it you don't have reciepts for all of the aftermarket stuff you have on the car. No offense there guy but you would be lucky to get that much for a GTA w/o the dent. Like most people on this board, I like Pontiac's version of the F-body - but the reality is the 3rd gen iteration has not kept its value as well as many of us 3rd gen 'bird fans would like to think. If you need the cash PM me and I'll see about hookin up w/ ya.

Honestly i said no thanks cause you are gonna fly here from Texas. And once here possibly try to talk me down from the original $2000 you offered. Quite a few people in this thread are interested in the car for what i'm asking. And it is OBO. You make it seem like i'm asking for $7500. I was rather nice and said thanks anyway. Somehow this bothered you. So i'll try this. Thanks but no thanks.

Re: '91 Formula TPI 5 Speed
So based on your statement. You don't like the car. Don't like what it needs to fix the few things wrong with it. And you don't believe ive purchased/put on the go fast goodies cause i can't find the receipt for some of it. Doesnt seem to me you really want the car. As i said, the clutch grabs fine, the receipts i cant find are for the BFG's which have about 6000 miles on them and the headers which i got off of ebay. With one look you can see there rather new.

That's an interesting assumption. I do believe my statement was I would give you "2K cash, straight up" I quoted you that price based on the look of the pics, the issues w/ the car, and the work you have stated that has been put into the car - I gave you what I thought was a fair price. If I was going to "try and talk you down from 2K" I would have just told you a lower price to begin with - at least that is how I thought negotiating went. In fact, I figured the price would end up somewhere b/t both of our figures. It sounds to me like my original offer bothered you more than anything. Anyway, sorry for the trouble and if someone takes you up on your price then congrats.

Re: '91 Formula TPI 5 Speed
Oh and by the way, I like the car alot - your reply to my offer made it sound like you were bent b/c I offered too low of a price for your ride. And I never said I didn't believe you didn't buy the stuff; keeping records is a pretty big deal for a those of us that want to invest in a vehicle and reciepts are a big part of that. Finally, you did not JUST state that the clutch was "fine". Here is your quote:
"I took the car to Englishtown once last year and could feel the clutch not quite grabbing as it should, but a year later it is still holding up fine"
You basically told everyone that you felt an issue, but that it is still "holding up" fine. That can mean alot of things.
Look, I am interested buyer and I am just trying to make sure you are putting out detailed facts so I know what is what w/ this vehicle. That is all. I think you are making a few to many assumptions. Like I said before, my apologies if you misread my statements, I wasn't trying to ruffle your feathers by putting out some facts.

BTW...This is my daily driver. As i said, the clutch is fine. Does not slip at all. In any gear. I do not HAVE to sell it. Was just looking to move on to something new.

Re: '91 Formula TPI 5 Speed
It is so hard to sell these cars, I know, trust me. They are great vehicles, but age is not in there favor for us sellers. The only thing I say is try going to a used car dealer and see what 5k gets you..........nothing. Andrew
