1988 GTA 'Notchback'
I figured I’d post this up to see if there’s any interest before I come to my senses.
I love this car it has been my toy for years, only driven on weekends and to car shows. Takes long road trips like a champ. Only been caught in rain once or twice. Southern car its whole life not a spec of rust!
It’s a 1988 Trans Am GTA ‘Notchback’. That’s right one of only 624~ made. Yes it is original (have the documents from PHS to prove it.)
5.7L/A4 Car
Body has 136k on it
Motor has 37k (original 5.0L was replaced)
Transmission has 37k on rebuild (with cooler)
Mods:
Engine:
Mild port and polish on plenum
SLP Runners w/ mild port and polish
ZZ9 Cam. (great cam, sounds almost stock)
24# injectors
1.6RR
CAI
High flow oil pump.
Exhaust:
SLP 1¾” Headers
Off Road Y-Pipe
Hooker Catback exhaust.
Suspension: (All less than 1 year old)
Sub-Frame Connectors
Wonderbar (steering brace)
LCA Relocation
Eibach Pro-Kit
New shock/struts (Monroe sensa-trac)
Misc:
New headliner
Alarm /w remote start (works too!)
Dark tint all around.
Chip from PCMforless
Fuzion ZRi Tires (60-70% tread left)
9-bolt with 3.70’s
All smog is gone and the AC system was replaced with a fully working delete box. AC never worked anyways so at least you still have heat and defrost.
Now on to some details.
Interior wise new headliner looks great. Front seats are good, rear seats are fair-good. Carpets Fair-good. Doors Fair. Dash looks great but there is some cracking on the edges that butt up against the doors. Digital dash, EVERYTHING WORKS!
The exterior is where I feel this car needs the most improvement. The paint is a definite 10 footer. Looks great driving down the road and from a distance but take the time to look it over and you’ll see problem areas. Front bumper and Hood have minimal damage. (see pictures)
If I had to rate everything:
Engine/Drivetrain: 9/10
Suspension: 7/10
Interior: 7/10
Exterior: 6/10
In summary it’s a great car. A blast to drive and gets tons of comments everywhere I go. Not many have ever seen a notchback in person and despite its flaws it’s won a few trophies but it is not a show queen. Drives, handles, and runs great.
Car is located in Greensboro, NC. Any questions please ask or come check it out in person. You can also reach me through my email address, salsashark@techemail.com
Asking $6,800
I feel this is far below what the car is worth and way more has gone into it obviously, but we all know how this car hobby works .
I am open to offers but don't low ball; I would rather keep this car than sell it too cheap.
Here’s some pics, All are recent pics (less than a year old at most) I will take pictures of anything anybody wants once I give her a bath. (pollen season… not good for black cars) The third picture is an older one but its the only one I have that shows off the hood/bumper.

Thanks for all the interest. Sorry, I've been really busy to update. Was going to take picutres today but of course it rains.... hopefully after work tomorrow I can get some uploaded.
Can't really do trades right now as I've got too many vehicles as it is.

Re: 1988 GTA 'Notchback'
Ok Got a chance to take a few pictures today. Let me apologize for how dirty the car is. It's been raining here a lot lately and I've been and still am ridiculously busy. I know thats no excuse but she will be all cleaned up when someone wants to come look at it.

Also I don't think I mentioned that like many others the pull down hatch motor doesn't work. Still opens and closes manually just fine.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. I know the last pic is a bit strange, It's back where the muffler is located. Best I could do for a pic, the whole underside looks that good if not better, real clean.

Re: 1988 GTA 'Notchback'
In the Off posttion, it is locked in place & the steering wheel is locked like it should be.
But when running, the key can be pulled out, with the engine still running.

Re: 1988 GTA 'Notchback'
Previous owner installed an alarm with remote start. I don't know how they installed it but you don't need the key in to turn it to the on postion. Everything works fine though including the remote start.

Re: 1988 GTA 'Notchback'
I can't believe I didn't buy this car. I was *that close* but my wife was opposed and a friend of mine who also happens to be a stock broker convinced me to put my money in the market. You can guess how that's going.

Re: 1988 GTA 'Notchback'
Thanks for the interest. It's still for sale, AFAIK the paint is a single stage and its really starting to show. It's the worst part about the car, looks decent when cleaned up but it could really use new paint to be amazing.
You can install a regular hatch on it no mods required but really the question is why would you? there's so few notchbacks left...
If anyone wants to come take a look at it let me know. It has sadly been sitting here not being driven much other than once a week to keep everything working.
Can't say I'm too sad I haven't sold the car yet because I do love it, but times are tough.
