There were tons of sparsely optioned formulas that came from the factory, and rear disc brakes wasn't the only option that many didn't come with. My first car was an '87 Formula with an LG4 (305 4bbl) and a 5 speed. It had a crap peg-legger 3.23 10-bolt that sported rusty drums at the corners. The only features that rig had was a power seat and the factory sub, which was probably long gone by the time i got it (still had the little rf gain switch in the dash). The only thing that the great majority of thirdgen formulas have on other firebirds is purely suspension. People are just cheap and stupid, and don't really think things through. In 1987, the original owner of my formula could have a TPI engine rather than that sorry carbed POS for another $600. Its that same mentality that turns nice cars into the beat up buckets you see on the roads these days via neglect.

Way back in the Eighties and with the price of cars increasing and with the sky high interest rates. That $600+ was a lot of money to pay for a engine option (TPI}. I know, I could of had a 350 IROC for a extra $1200 and had to settle for the 305TPI and get the $1000 rebate. So don't knock the ORIGINAL OWNERS of these cars or you would not be driving one now. Yeah some things do not make any sense about the rpo options but...
Why knock the original owners? The salesman were just as misinformed/not car people as they are now.The org owners bought the car off the lot. They did not build the car,not everyone pre-orders their car's options....plus no one forced you to buy the cars you have either. Just a thought.

One way or the other we would be driving used thirdgens now. However, if more of the cheap bastiches had ordered, or had only purchased the performance-optioned cars off the lots rather than the cheerleader-optioned cars, i.e. LG4, auto, rear drum w/2.7X rears, GM and the dealerships would have been forced to supply us with cars that were meant to go fast (with all the right parts), rather than look like they could. This would have resulted in better equipped thirdgens for our community.

Don't be surprised. Many people only purchase cars based on looks and or fuel economy. Hence the plethera of Iron Duke F-bodies out there.
You think rear drums are bad. Try driving a 3000LBS. car with a 90HP 4 banger pushing it.
When you go to a dealer alot of times you will take something that's on the lot rather than ordering a vehicle. Also many sales people are more willing to work with you on vehicles that are on the lot rather than ordering another one.
I agree in principal that if you are going to get a car like this it should have the best of everything.
I thought to myself if I ever get the money to get a 4th gen new I would go in there and get the very best options, the most power, and the color I want.
Now since they are no longer made if I want to get one I will have to take what I can find that meets my criteria the best.

If I remember correctly, someone mentioned in an older post about this same subject that, due to a strike, there was a shortage of disk rearends. This led to the use of rear drum rearends on many of the 90's cars with the WS6 package.

When I first got the car and noticed that, I got pissed, thinking some ******* had swapped the rear in the cars past, then confused when I read the RPO's and found it was factory.
