80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

Hey guys, I was cleaning out the closet, and I pulled out six cases (two are in the pics) of Hot Rod, Car Craft, Super Chevy, you name it, magazines from the early 80's up until the present. Was just going through some of them, and I already came across a sweet article named "GM's Toybox", where it showcases the earlier concepts; '92 RS w/LT1 & ZF Six Speed, '89 454 Camaro entitled "Angry Poodle" (it was an answer to Chevy's Big Doggie '89 454 Corvette), and a couple of others in just that one mag. Is anyone interested in these articles, would you like me to scan and/or rewrite some of them? I only scratched the surface so far, who knows what else dwells within (I just found that article "Kinetic Engineering" w/Preston Smith's '85 Iroc as well, wow that was a long time ago)....

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

Before any articles are copied, I would contact the editor and get permission to reproduce. The articles are already published in magazine format so republishing the same thing online is copyright infringement. Because of the age of the article, they will probably not have any issues with it and tell you to have a good time. This is just a CYA so you don't get into trouble with large amounts of duplication.

That is really awesome. I could spend days ... even weeks ... doing nothing but going through that stash. Good call on contacting the mag editors. I doubt they would take action if you didn't ask permission, but better safe than sorry.

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

I'll do that then, I'll reach out to the editors to get they're permission ahead of time, and if obtained, I'll start scanning them. I'll seperate the historical articles from the regular build articles of course, as that's what I'm really after, the historical one's. That "454 Angry Poodle" article alone was pretty interesting, and although the project was scrapped, I'm pretty shocked they actually contemplated it. To think that that project alone, if it made it to production, would have justified (legally) the big block swap....

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

There should be some great articles in the mid-80's Popular Hotrodding. They did a comparo and project builds on the L69 Z28/5.0 Mustang/Shelby Charger (pre-Turbo). The Z28 ended up with a low profile supercharger, nice cowl-style hood and suspension. The engine made around 369hp (at the wheels I believe). After these builds over a period of ~ 1 year, PHR then did a comparo between the Shootout winner, the now-modded Z28, and a Porsche 911 Carrera. It would be neat to see some of those articles since my mags left my possession some years ago.

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

^ Hey Chip, I sent quite a few e-mails regarding the articles, hoping for them to give me the okay (I don't see why they wouldn't, they're still getting plugged either way you look at it). I haven't heard anything yet, but once I do, the scanner will be ready and waiting....

Sounds good. I hope you get some good responses. Maybe one the editors will make a decision rather than legal. They might feel a little more compasion for us.

You wanna hear something funny....?

In the basement getting ready to lift a blue crate of something up the stairs, when I find it to be unusually heavy! Pop open the lid, and.....

Jeez, my cousin Gaspar really loved these damn magazines, ehh....?

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

nice find!

I have a few binders full of road tests I cut out of magazines and put in plastic sleeves. (over 100 tests I think..just of 3rd gens)

You should do the same--cut out the good stuff and recycle the junk.

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

^ Not a word, and I don't want to get ThirdGen.org in trouble with any copyright infringement laws, so I'm holding out until they at least acknowledge me. I sent a very curtious e-mail to all of them too, and I'm very surprised I got nothing back. I'm thinking about hosting them somewhere else soon, and just providing a link here....

Did you write the authors or the magazines themselves? If you did the authors maybe try the magazines themselves? Just be carefull when hosting them since you are in the USA.

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

Did you steal some of mine?

Looks like my stashes of magazines. Almost EVERY Hot Rod & Car Craft from 1980-2000, I have a "few", as well as quite a few from the 70s.....I collect mags like crazy. If your interested in selling any, lemme know!

I've posted several scans here on TGO & nobody ever suggested I contact the mags, nor have the mags sent TGO or me a "Cease & Desist" order....Post away...Don't get worried...The mags don't care about sharing history.

Re: 80's & 90's Magazine Hard to Find Articles, Hundreds of Them....

I have a few mags that have third gen tests or comparos involving third gens. In addition to that I am sitting on a gold mine out here at McPherson College (The only college with a 4 year degree in Automotive Restoration) As the Library here on campus has all the magazines from Road and Track, Motor Trend, some Car and Driver and some Automobile as well as a whole host of other automotive press material. I even have brochures out here (not all though). I am willing to search for them all and scan them in sending them in to the media section. I sent and Email to JL but never got any word back.
I am only out here for one more semester so if people want a whole host of stuff added to the media section now is the time.
Any suggestions? I would have a hard time seeing the magazines going after people posting magazine articles on a fourm site as reference material. Afterall unless they are aftermarket mods all the road tests are 17 years old.

I think you meant me. I don't recall receiving an email at jt or webmaster at thirdgen.org. If it was sent to the latter, it might have gotten flagged as that is quite an old email address/alias and does get it's share of spam. If so, sorry.

Hey guys, I have no idea why I'm not getting notified anymore through e-mail in reference to this thread, in fact, I hardly ever get notified when there is a response to any thread anymore, other than PM's for some reason. Anyways, I'll start posting them up soon. I'll credit the source in each one, and will indicate that they're subject to removal of course to COA; cover our @sses....

It needs to be sent to me for editing the scans, uploading them to our web server, then creating the webpage in the CMS to link to them. I can be reached at jt@thirdgen.org or webmaster@thirdgen.org

Thanks.

Thanks JT, now I have a project other than my Senior Thesis to work on during my spare time. Most of the mags in the Stacks are bound so the scans might not be perfect.

When I get my hands on my scanner again sometime in January I will scan in some and send them to ya. My goal is to get as many of the articles as I can out of the library and on the site before I graduate in May and getting them gets a lot harder. These would be good articles and references for those who want to keep their cars stock or restoring them.
