Hey guys, I was wondering is any of you had any good leads on a website where you can find all the information you want to know abut your camaro.

I want to know what kind of transmission I have in my camaro, and what model engine I have. I also want to know what kind of differential I have and what the gear ratio is ?

Its an 86 Z28 T-top 305

you should have a 700R4 trans starting in 1990 it was called the 4L60 (do not confuse with the 4L60E which was introduced in 1994)

As for the Diff, you would have to have the SPID sheet in your center console for that... The engine can be decoded by the VIN.... 8th digit, H = LG4 4bbl (very common), G = L69 4bbl H.O. (VERY rare) F = LB9 TPI (fairly common)

I actually just Googled mine as "1991 Camaro RS tech sheet." You wouldn't believe what I could find from that search, including some of the info you are looking for.

I also recently found on eBay Motors a sales brochure for my car, in brand new condition. It's awesome. Anyway, it has tons of that info in it, too. I only paid about $15 for it, including shipping and handling.

I have tried the tech data but it does not give any info on gears or type of transmission. Is it safe to say that most all z28 came with a 700R4 tranny ? I also have a 92 RS that I am looking to find what kind of tranny is in that one because I am installing a Q jet carb, ECM, and wiring harness on that one from my z28 parts car. It was a v6 and I purchased it converted to a 305 BUT no wire harness and gauges dont work. I am in the process of tranfering all my wiring from my z28 to my RS and its going pretty smooth except I want to know what kind of tranny it is.

My z28 had a 700r4 type kickdown cable on the carb, however I dont see that cable anywhere on my RS with the 305 truck engine in it. Again, my RS used to be a V6 so I want to know if that model came with a less durable tranny so I can decide if I am going to switch everything over to that car. Note: engine in my z28 was burning a lot of oil so it would not pass emissions test and that is why I can not just switch the whole thing as one unit.

Well said! Just make sure you search first so you don't get yelled at for posting something that has been answered a million times already, lol.

Heres a little info for you though.

If your car is an auto, you rear end should be 2.73 open differential
if it is stick, 3.23 open

Also you probably have the LG4 305, which had a pants-soiling 160HP

Just look up the tech data for your car on the main page, all the info is here you just need to look for it some.

I checked that site but its only for Pontiac it seems. I have also done a search on the net but still nothing.

I am pretty sure I have a 700R4 transmission in my z28, however I am still confused about my RS. It had a V6 which the guy took out and put in a truck engine 305. He couldn't have used the V6 transmission for that swap so I am just trying to figure out whats in there. I should mention that the swap was a pretty bad hack job at best, wiring all over the place and just a mess. I have got a proper wiring harness for it now, as well as computer and gauges and all that.

One thing to note is that he said the transmission was a 3 speed ? Does that narrow it down any ?

700r4 is a 4 speed right ?

I have found this site to be a great help. In fact a lot of what I have done so far would not have been possible if it were not for the knowledge I got from this site, and I am sure I will find some good info on here this weekend as well, which is another action packed weekend as far repairs go ha ha ! I would think it is a 350 Trans being a 3 speed. It might be a 400 trans but I doubt it... More people go for the 350 trans... But without looking you would never know.

I am going to get under the car this weekend and take a picture of it and post it on here. I will also try and get any kind of numbers off of it that I can find.

Hopefully I will be able to find out what model it is...

OK - so you confused my old brain

As far as STOCK goes, to my knowledge every 3rd gen that had an auto tranny came with 700R4's. There is a big difference between the stock V6 700R4 and the V8 700R4 - they will not interchange.

In late 1987, there were changes made to the 700R4 to beef it up a tad, at least on the V8 tranny's - so it's been said that a 700R4 V8 tranny from 1988 and later is more desireable.

BUT - all that said, there's no real way of knowing exactly what you have unless you tear into it to find out. 3rd gens have long been modded by everyone and his brother throughout the years, and it's getting harder and harder to find any of them left with stock equipment. Tranny's I'm no expert on, so to look at a photo of a TH350, a TH400, and a 700R4 I personally wouldn't be any help - others here might, especially if you post in the transmission section. On the rear end gears - same story - many have been replaced, so the only true way to know is to open the differential casing and look on the gears for ratio stampings, or count gear teeth.

All that information is in the Haynes manual for the Camaro. There are codes stamped into the differential or drive shaft and you can match them up with a list in the Haynes manual that tells you what gears you have and if your diff is an open or posi. I am going to get underneath my z28 and RS today and get those codes and see what kind of gears I have.

If anybody else wants to know this info than just send me yur codes

IIRC in 1982 the Transmission was the TH350, in 1983 all V8's and V6's got the new 700R4. The biggest difference between a V6 and V8 700R4 is the bell housing, thus making it difficult to interchange. There were some things that were stronger in the V8 version so it is not a good idea to actually use a V6 verient of the Trans with a V8. I read an article a long time ago about all of the differences... Also there are differences between Performance models IE a TPI, and an LG4 Transmission, there are beefier parts even in the higher output versions. Honestly there is a local guy that had access to a Trans Dyno and he litterally would punish a 700R until it failed, then he would fix that part and do it over and over until he got it virtually bulletproof...

Interesting. I am fascinated with mechanical things and just recently I started getting more into engine building and the science behind it. I bought this transmission building dvd where the guy rebuilds a 700r4, its the "boxwrench" series...don't know if you ever heard of that ? Anyways, I was totally amased at the transmission and all the small little parts and it looks super intimidating taking one of those things apart, and now I am almost more interested in knowing how the transmission works than the engine. Talking about your local guy that builds transmissions on the dyno, seems like a highly skilled craft, building a great tranny. Thats really cool that people do that.

How I ended up finding him was I lost 3rd & 4th... The transmission I had was originally an LG4 (4bbl) trans, but after changing the cam, increased compression, axle ratio and converted to TPI, and installed headers & torque converter the trans could not handle all that I had done to it. More or less it lasted about 7 years or 14K miles. I was never happy with the performance of the transmission as it always shifted too early and would literally go into overdrive at 30mph...

I started calling around for prices and I asked if they could make it shift at 5200 RPM, and go into overdrive at 45 Mph... I got a myriad of answers, from "we only put it back to original spec" to "Pick out a shift kit and we will install it for you". He said "no problem" I asked what shift kit he used, and he said he made his own. I was so blown away... In short he does killer work, he made it shift spot on and it drives great.
