when i bought my car a few months back it didn`come with the key for the doors and hatch. is there anyway to get some cut if i give them the vin off the car? or do i have to pull out one of the cyls and take it to a lock smith?

I you have the original locks the dealer has the codes.
If you dont take the car You will have to have proof of ownership in most dealers these days..

I have one set of keys for my car as well... I've heard rumors GM charges absurd amounts for this, anyone know what a "fair" price range is?

The ign key is like 25 an door keys are less than 5bux.
I buy sooo much crap there they do mine for almost free..

The key codes are in the same database as the RPO codes, the dealer won't have them on file unless the car is a 90-92 or Canadian.

The next obstacle is that most dealers don't cut a lot of keys. My normal parts guy had to make 3 or 4 keys before we got one that sorta worked.

What worked for me was taking one of the door locks to an actual locksmith. He was able to disassemble the cylinder, gauge the tumblers, and code cut a new key. The first attempt worked perfectly.

For awhile I always was ending up with cars missing locks, or broken locks, or worn out keys. A real locksmith is the best way to go to get all the locks working and to have keys made.

The dealer I go to has the codes. I Got them for my 89 formy and my friends 87 and 88 formys..
I guess it depends on which dealer you go to as to the service you get and if they want to mess with it or not.
My dealer even recodes them if ya want.

Most dealers a rip-off, and don't want to fool with anything but warranty work - I'd personally just visit a locksmith. You can remove the cylinder for the rear hatch (since they are the same cut as the door keys) - that's alot easier than taking a door panel off!

Might even work to take the cylinder from the rear glove compartment to a locksmith.

i dont think the compartment lock has all the tumblers that the door/trunk lock does. i had to get a set of keys made and the locksmith couldnt do it by it.

Usually the rear storage compartment /glove box lock will not have all the
"tumblers" that the door and hatch locks have so a new key cannot be made
from them.

The door lock is the easiest to remove and then off to a locksmith.

i have to open my drivers door anyway as my powerlock is not working on that side so i guess i will remove that lock. are they hard to remove i have never tsken 1 out before

Dealers may have codes for cars starting around '87. Any early than that and they probably won't. What other people said is right, you may have a hard time finding a dealer that is willing to get your code or may charge crazy money to get it. However, it doesn't hurt to try.

Not really, but the hatch one would definitely be easier to get to. All that holds it is a clip. Rotate the little white rod holder around till you can pull the rod out of the lock, then use a screwdriver and pop the metal clip out.

So kill 2 birds with one stone !

Pull off the door panel !
While your in there pop off the lock rod clip........EASY!
Then pull the clip that holds the lock in the door.

Can you hear the power lock motor working?
If YES....................
Then clean/spray down the lock assembly with wd-40.
Years of gunk have built up and usually make the lock rods and levers sticky.
Then re-lube with white grease.

If NO...........Check fuses and wiring then check/test lock motor.
It prob. needs to be replaced.

i don`t hear anything when i hit the lock switch, the pass door only slides about half way but if you hit it a few times it will go further everytime so i think it just need cleaned up a bit or used i don`t know how offten it got used before i got the car the `po` only put 4000 km on it in the 3 years he owned the car...he also had a firebird alittle newer that he drove when he had the time to cruise which wasn`t often

what is the best way to pull the door panel off? i have had them off on other cars before but not on these camaros.

good idea but you would have to take your ignition out and all your door/hatch key selenoids out and give it to the lock smith to match up all the tumbelers to fit 1 key. if you had to replace some of them anyway it might be worth it, but it would be alot of work otherwise just to have 1 key instead of 2
