What Would You Do? 1988 IROC's Debate
Hey all,
Forgive me if this is in the wrong place......but I figured it would fit best here.
Currently I have a very nice original 1988 IROC. I use it quite a bit and even thought it has plenty of miles, it is still in good shape. I'd like to modify it, but can't bring myself to start tearing into a car that has survived 20 something years with no major changes.
In 1990, I also bought an 88 IROC. I had it for 6 years, modified and sold it to a friend who still has it. It was probably the most fun car I ever had and spurred my interest in third gens I still have today. I was 20 at the time and it was a huge deal to have an almost new IROC back in the day.
My friend bought it in 1996, redid the motor, got married, had kids and let the car sit inside till this present day. In fact, it's still sitting. It needs a fuel pump, paint, tires and brakes, but it is my first IROC. The car isn't for sale, but I'm sure I could talk him into it if I tried. The deal was when I sold the car was that I could have first dibs on it when it went up for sale.
I am now getting to a spot where i would have a place to work on the car which has plenty of performance parts. If you could have only one, what would you do?

Over 80 views and no one has any opinions? Maybe I'm crazy for posting it?

Not sure what you're asking either but if it's whether you should modify or stay stock, I'd personally stay stock. Modified 3rd Gens are a dime a dozen and they have a very limited market once you go to sell them. Good original cars are a lot less common and have more appeal, and will be worth even more in the future. If I really wanted to modify, I'd get one already modified. My $.02

Re: What Would You Do? 1988 IROC's Debate
Generally speaking, I don't like modified 3rd gens. The reason being, that only a small percentage of them are done "properly". Most of them seem to be be half-assed, hillbilly, hackjobs. Next stop for them ----parts car and junkyard.
In fact, how many "project cars for sale" do we see here on this very site. That's where someone took a perfectly serviceable and desireable 3rd gen, decided to take it apart for modding, and never got it back together again.
Personally, I'd rather have a neglected but unmolested car, rather than one with various previous owner modifications.
So, with that said.....
If you want to modify an IROC, get the already modded one from your friend and have fun, but keep your stock one stock.

But when you start adding aftermarket wheels, rear hatch louvers, cowl induction imitation hoods, tinted headlight and taillight covers, etc. to these cars, the cheeseball meter really starts to shoot into the red.

Re: What Would You Do? 1988 IROC's Debate
Thanks for the input guys, I apreciate it. What I was really asking is should I keep and modify the current car, or spend the time, effort and money to get my first IROC back and put it on the road. My current car is a great starting point, but it doesn't make sense to put a ton of money into it when the other one has been modified already and the current one is so original. The first one is even in pretty good shape as it's been stored inside for the past 15 years. I still have all the original parts to it too if you can believe that.
As far as hacking it up, that's just not me. I'd make it quicker, but would still look relatively stock except maybe for some updated wheels/brakes. Both are identically optioned 5.7 IROCs except the white one has the Bose audio.

Thats actually a thought too.....I need to get in our new house first and see what kind of garage room I have. If I can swing it, it might be a possibility

That black one, if I owned it, THE VERY FIRST THING I WOULD DO, probably even before I got it all the way home, would be to take off those ugly-a$$ generic "modular" wheels and put the right ones back on; or, get a set of later-model APPROPRIATE ones, that look somewhat like they match the car's styling, instead of looking like an alien spaceship parked next to it in the grocery store lot and some parts fell off and accidentally got stuck. Some late-model Vette wheels for example. Those ... other hideous things just look so .... plain, and so ....... COMPLETELY mismatched to the overall appearance of one of these cars, it hurts to look at it. About like putting 14" steel wheels with baby moon hubcaps on a 4th gen would look.
Other than that, DAMN FINE looking car!!

If i could get my first camaro back ....i would in a heartbeat. My first one is probably a honda by this time however lol. My mother totaled it on me years ago. I love my "new" one more than the old one but its still not my first.

Man, that's a tough call from my point of view. I am a sucker for a white car, every time. But, if my first Camaro was available, I would probably get it if I could. Be pretty sweet to have a pair white/black. Luck to you, and as long as you have at least one you are on the right path anyway.

Re: What Would You Do? 1988 IROC's Debate
Hello Rumblin70SS!!
Get both of them!!
I have three........Red, White, and Blue!!
I have to have one parked in the garage at my son's house, due to a "space" problem, I let him drive that one ( I regret it everyday that I see him driving it too!! As he really doesn't show any "real" respect for the car, but he pays the insurance to drive it )
Modding this generation of Camaro is like taking a beautiful woman, and turning her into a bag lady, just doesn't do it for me!!! Stock is the way to do this generation justice!!
