Re: Third gen testing with Sixth gen
What's the reason behind this? I'm really curious, could mean a lot more attention to our cars!!

Cool to see GM still using these cars for testing.

Re: Third gen testing with Sixth gen
I will bet it is for responsiveness testing. The 3rd gen's were placed on a diet for fuel economy and were pretty light cars. The 6th GEN could do well to take some guidance from the red car in the weight department that is for sure.

Phil,
That is for sure... it seems the new cars are so darned heavy... the new Camaro Convertible almost weighs as much as my old 67 Riviera... And they used to call them boats...
I want to think the 3rd and 4th gens were the lightest of the breed.
I bet they are testing the 3rd gen camaros with the new engine for durability, rather than make several preproduction cars use an old platform to test the engines to hide the new design.

I hear they retrofitted the new turbo 4 banger as a replacement. Puts 272 HP and 294tq out of a 2.0. They tout it as a fuel/emissions compliant replacement.

272 HP 4 Cyl Turbo? If the numbers were real, I would take my 220 HP any day over a 4 cyl turbo... Was not that impressed with the Turbo Solstice I drove... It was quick, but by far not as fun as my V8 with less HP and a heavier car...

They are testing it as a replacement for our generation of cars. It runs about 9k for the kit so I don't see a point. Read it on one of the mag sights a few days ago.

Look up the 2.0 LTG motor. They mention our cars a lot in most of the articles. Includes a 6 speed manual I guess.

Re: Third Gen testing with Sixth Gen
For $9K I will get an LT or LS motor... For a little more you could get an LS7, ok about twice as much...
For $5014 you can get an LS327 - 327 HP
For $7763 you can get an LS3 - 430 HP
Not sure who would be interested in it...
Not sure if any of these are a complete kit...

I agree. I think its aimed at emissions standards and fuel economy. I wouldn't spend 9k. Its a complete kit tho. Gm performance markets it. I wish I knew how to share the link. It also had the new LT and dr525 motors in the article.
It is aimed at retrofitting any older v8. A lot of us spend a fortune trying to stay emissions compliant. This is 50 state legal from what I understand.

I believe it said the trans is similar to the Saturn sky 6spd? I've read so many articles that honestly its all getting jumbled lately.

Re: Third Gen testing with Sixth Gen
There is a small compromise at lower engine speeds, but anywhere 2500rpm and up the turbo kicks in instantly, about as fast as your foot can go to the floor. When carving corners you wouldn't even notice it.

Re: Third Gen testing with Sixth Gen
from the looks of the new (2016) Camaro, calling it a 6th Gen hardly seems justified. body seems basically the same as 2010-present.

Re: Third Gen testing with Sixth Gen
Current 5th gen is Zeta platform, which is shared with the larger Holden Commodore (Pontiac G8).
6th gen will be built on the Alpha platform which is MUCH lighter. The Alpha Platform debuted with the Cadillac ATS.
Base V6 Camaro is about 3750lbs.
Base ATS is about 3400lbs. A 350lbs difference.

i suppose that if they're switching to a different underpinning, then technically it must be a new generation of Camaro, but be that as it may, the pictures dont lie - the body appears to be the same car as the 2010 to now.
while a lighter platform that shaves three or four hundred pounds off the Camaro is exciting news, the fact that (as far as i know) for the first time in history there will be a "next generation" of any car with ABSOLUTELY NO significant body changes from the previous generation, is not very exciting.
*edit*
ya know what - i take that back. did they change the underpinnings of the new 2015 6th Gen Mustangs? because to me, it appears to be the same basic body style as the last years model. i mean, yeah, there's clearly been a facia change, but its less of a body change than from '98 to '99 (all 4th gen). based on appearances i think the 2010 to 2014 models (still 5th gen) look more different than the 2005-2009s than they differ from the 2015s (now 6th gen for some reason).
my point? up until now, it has always been very easy to visually distinguish the different generations of cars. and each new generation visually represented a new era for that car. now it just doesnt seem like much has changed, yet they're calling it a new generation of car.

Re: Third Gen testing with Sixth Gen
The body will be different enough to tell apart from the 5ths, along with a completely new interior and chassis. They just restyled the car for '14 so it's not changing THAT much, yet. The tidier dimensions alone will make it appear different.

Re: Third Gen testing with Sixth Gen
I think the Alpha is a smaller car... Keep in mind that the 5th Gen is the same basic platform as the Catera, GTO, G8, SS, Holden Monaro, & Commodore. In the end, although by itself it does not appear to be so, 5th gens are actually huge, park one next to a 1st gen and the 5th gen looks like a full size car. Not sure on the exact particulars, but I think it will be closer to the width as the 3rd & 4th gens, they changed the rear quarter window, which in camouflage looks awful...

Wheelbases
G8 = 114"
5th gen Camaro = 112"
Alpha = 109 - 114". The ATS is 109" Camaro might be smaller still.
Thirdgen = 101".
But a thirdgen also has huge overhangs and the overall length is about 195". A 5th gen camaro is 5" shorter @ 190".
I'm expecting much of the current platform's design queues to carry over though. The same short side windows and slab sides with the poor visibility.
I know that this design trend is happening due to side impact ratings, but I wish we could keep some of the more open feeling cabin of a thirdgen. Even my focus feels cramped inside.

Like I said, the 5th gens are huge, they just hide it well.. The Challenger is another one of those huge cars that hides it well. The Mustang really is the only "pony car" left, The Camaro and Challenger are both "Muscle" sized cars.
3rd Gen 101" wheelbase and 72" wide...
5th Gen Mustang (thru 2014) 107.1" Wheelbase & 73.8" wide
The 5th Gen Camaro is 112.3" wheel base and 75" wide...
3rd Gen Challenger (Current) 116" Wheelbase & 75.7 Wide
My 67 Buick Riviera is only 119" long and 78" wide...
My 2007 Tahoe is 116" Wheelbase and 79" wide

I disagree that the 5th Gen hides its HUGE size. Its the main criticism that people have of it. Up close it seems similar to a Tahoe.

Re: Third Gen testing with Sixth Gen
A Third Gen Camaro from bumper to bumper is about 188" in length. The early Z28s with the flat GFX were 187.8 inches. The restyled front ground effects made them total 192" from 85-92. The flat front and back 5th Gen Camaro is every bit of the 190" that they measure. It's slightly different.
The 6th Gen will be dropping both size and weight.
