Why no RPO code for cruise control?

I bought an 87 IROC-Z about three months ago. It has RPO 1SB, IROC package 2 on it. What I can't figuire out is that I have no RPO code for cruise control, yet the car has it. It's not an after market add-on. I'ts identical to the one on the 1985 i used to own. I also have the original widow sticker for the car it lists intermittant wiper, but not cruise control in the option group.

Was cruise control part of IROC package 2 for 1987?

The dealer or a previous owner could have added it using factory parts.

Cruise control (RPO K34) is not included in Option Package 2 (RPO 1SB). It is included in the next higher grade package, #3 (RPO 1SC).

Some GM cars have several levels of option packages. Usually they start at 1SA, and end at 1SC. On most cars, 1SA is going to be virtually no options, 1SB is power locks, power windows, various odds and ends, 1SC is everythign in the book power mirrors, seats, etc... This isn't always accurate because some cars had very few options that weren't standard... like 91-92 GTA's. 1SA on a 91 or 92 GTA is fully loaded.

Like Willie said, in 87 1SB didn't include cruise, but it was available as a seperate option and as a dealer installed item at the time of purchase. For an 87 Iroc 1SB should include power locks, power windows, and a few other options, it doesn't include the aux lighting, power mirrors, power seats, and some of the other bells and whistles.

Surpisingly it isn't part of this option package, I would think it would be. The best explaination is that it was dealer installed. I know the previous owner and he said it was like that when he bought it from the original owner. Like i said it's completely stock, looks like it came that way from the factory.

Thanks for the comments

Please state where your information comes from. I have three independent sources, none of which agree with the above, but all three list the same options:

1987 IROC-Z Option Package 1 (RPO 1SA), $669.
This package contains the IROC-Z sport equipment with no options.

1987 IROC-Z Option Package 2 (RPO 1SB), $2409 with Coupe.
Tinted Glass
Air Conditioning
Tilt Steering Wheel
Front/Rear Floormats
Intermittent Windshield Wipers
AM/FM Stereo w/Cassette
Power Door Locks
Power Windows
Power Hatch Release

1987 IROC-Z Option Package 3 (RPO 1SC),
With Rear Compartment Cargo Cover, $3273
Without Cover, $3204
Includes all the above, plus
Body Side Moldings
Cruise
Auxiliary Lighting
Halogen Hi-Lo Headlamps
Power Driver's Seat
Automatic Inside Rearview Mirror
Electric Twin Remote Mirrors
Interior Roof Console
AM/FM Stereo w/Cassette & Graphic Equalizer

Sources:
1) 1987 GM Camaro Brochure
2) Camaro White Book
3) Kelley Blue Book New Car Price Manual (4th Edition, 1987)

And on a personal basis, I have owned SIX 1987 Z28's (most with the IROC-Z option). Two of these were equipped with RPO 1SB, while the other four had RPO 1SC. I can state that of all the items listed above in the 1SC package, NONE were in the 1SB cars I owned. That would include the automatic day/night mirror, power driver's seat and twin electric mirrors (the most obvious options).

I don't believe that cruise was part of IROC option level 2. That leaves only two possibilities; it was installed by the dealership or it was a mistake on GM's part (installed on the car from the factory even though it shouldn't have been). Unfortunately I can't verify either. I do have the name of the original buyer, I suppose i could try and get a hold of them and see if they had it installed.

I have found a fourth independent reference that confirms the three others I have. It is the GM 1987 Dealer Order Guide (Camaro), Revised 12/08/86. I received it via USPS directly from GM years ago. I scanned it and attempted to upload it onto the webshots site so I could show the image here, but was unable to. Suffice it to say, the 1SC option package for the 1987 IROC-Z (not Z28 as it is completely different), includes (and I quote):

1SC Option Package 3
Moldings: Body Side, Color-Keyed
Speed Control, Electronic with Resume Speed
Cover, Rear Compartment, Cargo Cover (w/o B2L Eng. and CC1 Roof Panels)
Lighting, Auxiliary
Headlamps, Halogen, High and Low Beam
Seat, Power, Six-Way (Driver's Side Only)
Mirror, Inside Rearview, Automatic
Mirrors, Sport Electric, Twin Remote
Console, Interior Roof
AM Stereo/FM Stereo Radio w/Seek-Scan, Stereo Cassette Tape w/Search and Repeat, Graphic Equalizer and Digital Clock

If four independent references and my personal experience with owning a half dozen 1987 IROC-Z's (2 with 1SB and 4 with 1SC) isn't enough to convince you, maybe we should conduct an informal survey of 1987 IROC-Z owners. I can categorically state that the two 1SB cars I owned did not have an interior roof console, power driver's seat nor electric mirrors to name a few, all of which are included with 1SC (as per my four references).

I'll start this informal survey now. For all 1987 IROC-Z owners with RPO 1SA OR 1SB, please state if you have ANY of the options I list above. If my four reference manuals (and my personal experience) are somehow in error, we'll find out now. I will start a new thread asking this very question.

Hopefully, this will convince you that your reference is in error. Errors such as this won't be the first (nor last) time I've seen this happen. (I have a reference that states the 1LE was introduced in 1986!!)

If anyone wants to see my scan of the dealer order guide, please e-mail me.

Willie

I'll give you the RPO codes from my original window sticker.

The following options were ordered seperately:

AM9 SPLIT FOLDING REAR SEAT
AR9 GREY CUSTOM LEATHER INTERIOR
B84 BODY SIDE MOLDINGS
B91 BLACK DOOR EDGE GUARDS
CC1 T-TOPS
C49 REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER
G80 LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
G92 PERFORMANCE AXLE RATIO, IN THIS CASE 3.23 10 BOLT
J65 FRONT AND REAR DISC BRAKES
KC4 OIL COOLER
LB9 5.0L TPI
MXO AUTOMATIC
QDZ P245/50VR-16 TIRES
UA1 HEAVY DUTY BATTERY
U75 POWER ANTENNA
Z28 Z28 SPORT COUPE
1SB IROC OPTION PACKAGE #2
INCLUDES: IROC-Z PERFORMANCE PACKAGE, AIR CONDITIONING, TINTED GLASS, TILT WHEEL, FRONT& REAR FLOOR MATS, INTERMITTENT WINDSHIELD WIPER SYSTEM, POWER DOOR LOCKS, POWER HATCH, POWER WINDOWS, AM/FM CASSETTE W/ CLOCK AND ERSS

No where on the window sticker does it say the car should have cruise control. But it does. and it is factory stock, not after market.

so cruise is not part of option package #2. What I'd like to know is whether the dealership installed it at time of sale, or was it a mistake from the factory. Equipped with cruise when it shouldn't have been

Yours has option level #3. RPO code 1SC. Don't know why it"s not listed. Mine has RPO 1SB listed between, 1HV and 15P. Which is option level #2.
