Model year change 1987 - 1988

When was the production start for the 1987 GTA model year? I think in 10/1986?

My 1987 Pontiac GTA was built in 08/1987. Which month was the model year change for 1988?

Thank you for an answer.

Re: Model year change 1987 - 1988

N means Norwood car, so it's a 1987 (no more cars built in this factory after that year). The H also indicates it's a 1987 model.

Thank you.

In which month in 1986 was the production start for the 1987 model year?
And was 08/1987 the last month for the 87 model year?

Re: Model year change 1987 - 1988

I always thought the new model year was introduced around September of the previous year. I don't know if this was still the case back in the 1980's.

If it was the case, it's reasonable to assume that if you have an '87 model year car that was built in August of that year that it was one of the last assembled of that model year.

Yes August was the last month for 1987 production at Norwood.

Re: Model year change 1987 - 1988

It was usually around September. My 82 Z28 was built early September 82, almost was gonna end up getting booted to an 83, but my dad had a friend in the scheduling department and we got it moved up. It was nice back then when all the new cars came out in September, now its whenever they want to start a new model year basically.

I'm not sure that the first GTA production was in september 1986... I personally think it was in late 1986?

Re: Model year change 1987 - 1988

Model year change AT THE DEALERSHIP is usually right around Labor Day. (Sept 1 ish)

Production changeover is usually far enough in advance of that to build and ship the parts to the vehicle assembly plant, build enough cars to stock dealerships, ship them, prep them at the dealerships, and set up all the marketing.

Needless to say, that all takes a few weeks. Most of them that I've seen, they shut down the old year sometime in early - mid July, take anything from a day or 2 up to acoupla weeks to change over, and start cranking out the new model by Aug 1. Look around right now: you should be seeing the first of the 2017 models on railroad cars, if you know where to look.

Re: Model year change 1987 - 1988

I would say it mostly depends on the years, I have the build sheet of a VERY early 1980 Trans Am, in the first hundreds of cars made that year, it was built on the 27th of August 1979. So they started making 1980 models probably less than a week before.

I also have a buildsheet of a very late 1976 Trans Am, built on the 13th of August 1976. Maybe one of the last built that year, since I have the build sheet of a '77 Trans Am built on the 30th of August 1976, and according to the sequence number, it's in the first thousand built.

All Norwood cars by the way.

Re: Model year change 1987 - 1988

When I bought my '88 GTA new in 9-23-1988, the dealership tried every way in the world to get me to hold out for a loaded Gunmetal '89 they had in the holding yard behind the dealership. I could look at it and drive it (I didnt) but I was told they could not sell it until October 1, 1988.
