The way things are going with these cars im not surprised. I've slowly started to see some people gain interest in paying premiums for 82-84 cars but its still a smaller crowd and there still not on the same level as what the 85-92 cars are bring. But that was a pretty high end buy for an 82 so it's nice to see a few early 3rd gens getting notoriety.

Think about what that car cost new. Then add in the insurance cost over the years, utility cost to keep it in a climate controlled environment, shipping/travel fees from location to location and then add everything up Was holding on to that car this long in the hopes that it would offer a 200% return on investment really an investment?

I have no real analysis at all, just impressions. I go to eBay once a month or so and check out 3rd gen prices. I focus more on Firebirds than Camaros. The prices that I've seen there recently have definitely bumped up significantly. Perhaps it is an aberration, and who knows what final sales prices really are. But there does seem to have been a significant recent increase in the asking prices.

I'm probably at -400 percent by now, considering opportunity costs and maintenance

Oh yea, and then there's the $30,000 addition to the garage to store it!

That's a lot of money for a non pace car for sure. All used car prices have jump big time thanks to covid slowing down production of new cars. I have noticed that 3rd gen car are finally raising in value. Seam all the low mileage cars are coming out of the wood work.

I've also been noticing the 82-84 prices climb. I appreciate those years just as much as 85-up, and see no real reason why they shouldn't bring as much.
I sold a 22k mile, 82 Z28 two years ago for $15,000....and I'd gladly pay that amount to buy that car back.

Plus add inflation. I checked history of inflation, and from 1985-2020 the total inflation was 92.6%. This means if you paid 22k for it in 1985 dollars, you would have to get over 43k for it today, just to break even in today's dollars (not counting any other costs like storage).

Well, I got an offer from some clown on Facebook to buy my pace car at $3500 today. Some people are just idiots.
I've been seeing car prices all over the place. When just looking at the pace cars, I've seen a low mile car sell for $12k and a higher mile car sell for $22k. Explain that one. Maybe I need to raise my price. I've had many people ask about the car, and two people were serious about it, but no one has purchased it yet. Is it because I'm priced too low, or is my price too high? Too low and people will think it's too good to be true so something must be wrong with it, and too high a price, and people will think I smoke weird stuff.

The 80's car wise were a weird time. Slow and cool looking at first and by 92 better looking and better performance.
Always like your 82 Pace car
