I've got other ideas too. Would it work to install the 4th gen door panels with the controls and run the window switch wiring and the hatch release all the way to the pigtails in the center console? And the switches themselves are different, connector-wise right? And the hatch release is too? Would you have to splice the passenger window wiring to allow the passenger to roll their window down? Has anyone installed the interior fading light feature with success or is that impossible? A nice luxury but definitely not neccessary. Thanks in advance.

Yes as long as you use a T/A dash or the 97-up camaro dash.


93-97 clusters will all work. Its 98-02 clusters that are not 100% compatible.


it will wire up and work fine no converters needed. 90-92 Camaro's have electronic speedo's and the tach is not an issue though you may experiance a "bounce".


This is the best way to go to date. Mount your factory HVAC control in the 4thgen dash.


I have heard not all 97s had digital odometers. Why bother? you will be hard pressed to even find one. Go with the analog odometer and make your life easier.

Yes that will work. 4thgen panels do not fit properly you are seeing 'selective' shots users have chosen to post. You would be happier with factory door panels or a custom style. 4thgen panels= your doors wont close properly and they look like they are butchered in in terms of fit and finish. Everything is tight and squished.

Yes or you can wire the factory 3rdgen wiring to the double drivers side 4thgen switch. Adding the passenger side 3rd switch requires extra wiring work.

it is extremely difficult to get everything ironed out for the best fit possible, but with the effort and ones skill level, you can make them look and fit very good.

you post pictures of angles you want to see and ill try to duplicate those with my pics.
make it happen today. im going to wash the car and put the cover back on and it will be next week before id mess with it again.

i have "the gap" at the bottom front of my door panel, but only a purist would say they dont fit in this area.
everywhere else is great.......

you must have had bad luck fitting your panels, or really ****.

I think the fading light feature is controled by the 4th gen BCM 3rd gens aint got em.

Everyone's idea of looking good is different I suppose. I don't think it takes much skill at all to cut and chop these in anyone who does there own work should be able to do it. Personally that didn't fly for me in the end. It felt like one big butcher job for a cavalier like door panel.

Post all area's top bottom, sit in the car and close the door then get a pic of where the door panel meets the dash. Then get a pic from the top par corner looking down. Simply take pics from all angles.


I am very picky. I like things to look as stock as possible.Shroom posted pics of the best way possible to get a 4thgen looking panel in these cars who also tried to "massage" the factory ones in place.

The panels where never designed for a 3rdgen and to try and say they fit near 100% perfect without any type of glassing or reworking is a little far fetched. But then again everyone has different ideas of what close to stock is. I guess I am a "purist" as you say.

Anyone do a LT1 dash? I swapped an LS1 dash into my LT1 4th gen car so I still have the factory dash in my garage. Since my dash pad on my 91 is cracked, considering this as a cheap alternative, unless i come across a stock third gen dash pad then I will sell the LT1 dash

I cannot believe th work people can do with these cars. It's amazing i would own a camaro forever a third gen if it had 4th gen interior everything. It would look so updated some people think value would drop i think it whould sky rocket.

Complete walkthru for installing the 4th gen heater ducting into the 3rd gen.
I also grafted a complete 1994 harness into my 1983 Z/28, deleting the VATS, Passkey, SIR circuit, ABS system, and all emissions wiring. I do have working power door locks, power windows, interior lighting, dash lights, gauges, fully functional climate controls, retained accessory power, and power seats. I grafted in my modified 1985 Corvette TPI harness (injectors, O2 sensor, throttle position sensor, air intake temp, coolant temp, and tach only), and added in 24 pin computer connectors in strategic locations to allow modular removal of different parts of the harness. I routed my wiring thru the fenders, hidden under the heater box on the passenger side of the firewall, and kept the 1994 underhood relay/fuse box and have it mounted ahead of the windshield washer tank.

Will having an LSx swap make the dash wiring any different? Also what did you guys do with the window switches on cars you left the stock door panels in? On a 4th gen the switches are on the door not the center console.

Any of you dash swappers running the stock 3rd gen ECM (1227165 or 1227730 for a lot of your V8s)? If so, where did you mount it?

it would only be different if you're using the 98+ instrument cluster, since the gauge info for those comes from the serial bus. I opted to stick with the "LT1" cluster to run analog gauges just like factory 3rd gen

So I should be able to snip off the C100 bulk connector from the dash on the firewall and solder the corresponding wires on the new dash into the junction where they were on the stock dash?

Oh and another question I had was, what will I need to do with VAtS to ensure the car starts when I'm done

Is your vats turned off in the ecm? I wired the green ground wire from the start relay to a hidden switch and left it disconnected from the ecm. Works just like vats, wont crank until I flip the switch.

Yea I believe it is turned off in the ECM, but the 3rd gen aspect of the system still functions with the chip in the key and the box behind the dash.

never updated this thread but only issue im running into right now is not enough air flow through the vents. i cut 4th gen portion to match the oem 3rd gen but its not functioning how it suppose to. 4th gen ventilation must be different. any leads? if not im looking into heater air duct or something similar.

oh and i did my door panels a while back yes i know it has the usual crack up top

Unfortunately I don't*, I did use a torch to make this an easier install . Alot of trimming on the door panel it's self with no too many major cuts on the door sheetmetal besides the Interior door handle area

awesome job on the door panels, i have a set out of a 2000 SS hanging on my garage wall but havent got the ***** to go all out on it yet...only NICE set of black 3rd gen panels i can find is 300 bucks. too rich for my blood.

Congrats on all the hard work man, it does really update the look on our 3rd gens a whole lot, but then again its a classic/muscle car and you are gonna get people that complain saying that its meant to look older like it used too.... oh well, my first car was a 95 Z28 and the interior fitted me so perfect and it was real comfortable, and I have a 76 Camaro and my 87 Iroc, both cars have 4th gen seats in them and i think those are the best mods out of 100 ive done lol.

Ill be keeping an eye on your work with your 3rd gen so i can see what all 4th gen interior i can do myself also lol,

Why would I come to "so cal" for anything? I don't need to see a "full dash swap" been there done that. Just saying going on 2013 and still no clear shots. I wonder why.. And hey now! A new coat of paint takes far more skill then a 4thgen dash swap

Im new to the site, have already started this swap, have a LS dash and console I will be starting. The dash I have was already mounted in another 3rd gen, So I know exactly how to mount it with no problems but this wiring is killing me. I dont care about the heating, just need my head,brake lights to turn on and for car to start. Also, is the steering column wiring connected to the dash?

Looking for someone who did the 93-97 Camaro swap...

What is the easiest way to get the spacer plate (between the upper part of the dash and the windshield) out of the donor? If I haven't already said, the car that donated my dash was in a front end crash, the windshield was destroyed, and so was the plate. I know of another yard that has a couple Camaros (at least they used to the last time I was there) that I can get the plate from, but I don't want to destroy it until I have to cut it to size...

Anyone?

if its cold take a torch or a heat gun and a generator, LOL. if its warm out it will come out pretty easy.


if its cold temps or been baking in the sun for months, ive had them crack in half, and also break(and leave a white line) around where the clips are. some of them are reallllly holding it on. the hard ones are right around the hump in the instrument cluster. i think there are two.

i dont want to scare you, just inform you.

find a broken one in the yard and see if they will give it to you. i used a cracked one to make a template and transferred it onto my new one.

I really could use some help I have to use a gauge cluster from a 93-97 firebird because I'm not using a LS but some of the 97 firebird odometers are analog and some are digital does it matter?

No, it doesn't matter as long as you have everything wired correctly. Before I was finally able to get my hands on a 97 Z cluster I used an analog cluster from a V6 and a V8 93-97 bird. Of course the tach of the V6 was off but both of the speedos worked fine along with the odometers and trips.
