Trim painting project....Need some help

I'm looking to start a project, but so far, I ran into a little difficulty. I'm looking to paint the following pieces that I have outlined in red, but I'm wondering, is there anything that should be of concern when I take the trim pieces off?

Also, the piece of trim that's connected to the ciggarette lighter, I saw some wiring behind that. Do I do any disconnecting on that? I also want to do the opposite side that's the same trim as the piece I mentioned.

Same thing about the gauge face trim. Is there anything I should be worried about, or is it a simple unscrew the face and take it off kind of thing?

Also, on a seperate note, I had a question about the shift ****. How do I take that off? I saw that there was a staple-looking clip that was on there. Is there a screw on there? If so, is there any precautions I should take before removing it?

If anyone could help me on that, I would greatly appreciate it. I will post some before and after pictures as well

NOTE: The pieces I have outlined in red is what I'm looking to paint. This is currently a "before" picture.

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

Same as the guy above me, it's all a piece of cake to take off. No science behind it, just a bunch of bolts and screws, any wires you come across can easily be unplugged. To take the shifter pad off, you need either a knife or a flat head screwdriver. On the side of the pad that faces the ash tray, there is a metal clip, kinda looks like a huge staple with curved sides. All you gotta do is just pry that clip out, and pull the pad up. Sometimes you have to bang on it a little (bang upwards from the bottom of the pad) but it will come off. The emergency brake pad needs to come off also. There is a phillips head screw on the left side of the pad, just unscrew it and pull. That may need a bang also.

EDIT: The e-brake pad only needs to come off if you are removing the entire center console. Sorry about that.

on my 84 the shifter plate and ashtray comes off as one peice and is only held on by screws, no clips.

I was talking about the pad you put your hand on to shift into drive. The shifter panel does not come all the way off without removing that pad. I was describing how to remove that pad so he can take the shifter panel out to paint.

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

Sweet, ok now I know I'm in the safe zone. That's a plus.

I'm guessing the gauge face trim is good to go without any electrical problems?

I plan on doing a metalic red, or something that is alot more closer to candy apple red. I don't plan on going the full 10 yards and painting the entire console, but I do want a bit of color in there.

As of now, the pic that's posted is when I first got the car. The color scheme I'm going with is a simple red and black look, with the trim being candy apple.

I'm gonna try and get this project underway, and like I said, I'll post a before and after pic, along with the pieces all sorted and painted that are left to dry. Thanks for the help people

Brennan: I believe you on that part about it not looking good. However, all it takes is a creative mind and some good taste to make it flow nice.

good flow is not easy to accomplish when everything is square

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

Brennan: That's true. Everything is pretty square lol.

Well, I did less trim pieces than I expected, but here's what I decided to do instead of going with the 7.

Those were the pieces I decided on doing. Not too many, but just enough to make it where I would like it. Please execuse me for the poor lighting. The color I was going for was the candy red. the picture doesn't do it justice to be honest.

Here's the finished pieces, but not installed. NOTE: the first pic of the inside I posted is outdated, as I did add some additional touches to the inside.

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

To give you a better idea, these are pics from my old car. That, and these have far better lighting. When I get enough money and clean up my engine area, this is the color I plan on doing on some of the motor and valve covers.

My old car: 03 Galant (AKA my first car before I got my Camaro) One thing I'm glad about is the Camaro doesn't have quite as many pieces as the Galant did. Phew lol

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

Looks good. How was it getting the shifter **** off? Also, no offense, but what made you go from a r**er to a Camaro?

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

90 Camaro: The shifter **** came off like a breeze. Used a butter knife and pryed the pin out. Came out nice and easy.

None taken. I didn't go from a ***** by choice. To put it simple and short, my car got wrecked and I was in the market for another car after that happened. It was either a choice between other imports (another Galant, Eclipse, 3rd gen Supra, or a 96-98 Audi), or I could go with something else that I've always wanted since I was a kid (always wanted a black Camaro, but never did I think I would get a black Iroc).

I always liked my friend's Camaros (he had a white 91 RS and now has a 86 Berlinetta), so I already had an idea on how they feel and drive like. Not to mention a BIG difference in power between the import and American cars. I can't take any sides, as I've always like both import and American and respect both equally. However, I've always liked Chevy since I can remember, riding in my Dads 71 Chevy Cheyenne pickup when I was 6, and hearing the loud intoxicating rumble of the 350 notes coming out the exhaust.

I'll post pictures of the installed pieces. In all honesty, I personally think it came out pretty good (though my Dad said I should of went with a metallic purple with black theme instead). I could of went with a smooth textured surface if I used primer. Instead, I went with a slightly grainy appearance (that's my preference). vbmenu_register("postmenu_4005373", true);

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

Interesting story, seems to be a common thing on this board, it all starting with a childhood dream. It was the same with me. My dad was always into classic muscle cars. Taught me all about them when i was a little kid, but never had the money to get one, eventhough he owned all them when they just came on the market. One day, he decided to get a 65 Chevelle, and I helped him work on it ever since. And now, we got tons of classic cars. I respect your decision to go with a Camaro, the reason i asked is because you don't hear that too often. Anyway, from what I can see, the parts came out great, can't wait to see them installed.

Re: Trim painting project....Need some help

Nice. My Dad owned quite a bit of classic cars himself, though I never got to see them (I wasn't born at the time, though I wish I was just to see them.) My favorite one my Dad had was a black and chrome 57 chevy bel air. I wish I saw that black beast *sigh*

Well, here's a few pics of the finished installed pieces. (along with a pic of the 71). Honestly, it's a big jump from bein stock looking.
