Do you mean the console light that's under the dash panel?
Thanks so much for that picture! I've read about this light in other threads but never could find it in my car. Now that I see it, I understand why I have two cracked holes where a previous owner must have removed mine with a jackhammer or a bazooka.
On a related note, anyone have one of these they would like to sell?
You're welcome. Sometimes a picture's worth a thousand words for some of these more obscure items. The best place to find one is probably somebody parting out their car or an autowrecker. Good luck.
wow i have had my 91 for a long time and never saw that ill have to see if i have one. weird. recently i broke a rear view mirror so i bought more interior lights bc it was dark. ill see if that one would help to make it brighter for the misses too.
You can get a bit more light by making the pinhole where the light comes out larger. You have to carefully remove the small clear lense on the light unit and carefully drill it to what you need. Be very careful when doing this or you can crack the unit.

ok, now the picture shows a light under the dash, however all i have is two holes where the screws were at, but no hole where the wires were run to it at... how does this work out? does anyone have one that they could get rid of to put back if i were to find out how this thing hooks up...

ok, everyone can quit rubbing it in and just tell me where i can get one at... LOL if anyone is willing to unscrew theirs and take a picture of the mounting surface with it off, that would be great, like i said. i only have 2 holes where the screws went and no 3rd hole for the wiring, also, what color is the wires that go to that to see if i even have them in my dash anywhere...

It goes on when you turn on your parking lights or headlights. The bulb may be burnt out. The bulb number is 74.
ok, well since everyone is going to just ignore me and not help me out by telling me if anyone has an extra of where i can get one (Oriley's, AutoZone, Advance, etc. ) non of them have on in their books... so anyways, thanks to NOBODY for helping out on that one, preciate all the help that NOBODY gave me..
I just went to advanced and picked up the 74 light but I saw a 161 and there is no way the 161 would fit.Itwas huge. The bulb was the problem. The light works fine now.
Your prolly going to have to search the junkyards for the enclosure and all.Nobody is going to be making that still.
Has anyone changed the bulb in a trans am. I pulled the dash apart and found the part but it not just a replacement bulb , it is more of a whole assembly with 2 wires connected to it .
The later one as for my 92 is supposed to take the 161 bulb. I'm assuming that they figured out that the 74 was just a little to dim to do the job. The 161 is about 1 watt brighter, but takes a completely different mounting set-up. If I can get the camera working I will get a picture. I'm probably going to have to try and find a 2 or 2.5 watt incandescent bulb and socket from Radio Shack and modify the mount.
Im the one who did the LED conversion, if yall want i can do a real detail actual post on it PM me or something and tell me if yall want me to do it, i also made a LED light for your center console so you can see your crap it it
here is the link on the light http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/el...-controls.html (Light above HVAC controls)
rodsatheart, is this what you're referring to? Here are pics of the top and bottom of the light. Here's what the mount has written on the back, but you can't see it due to the poor quality of the pic:
1st line: 10181789
2nd line: OLP 2 PPO
This came from my '91 RS
chris.niemann84; my '85 has the two screws in the holes, but doesn't have, and obviously never did have, a light there. I never looked, but I assume the screws also serve another purpose, so just because the holes are there for those screws on your car, doesn't mean it once had, or was meant to have a light there.
The wires are black and gray.
Edit: The light on my '91 wasn't held in by any screws, it just pops in to place.
Also, is there a separate RPO for this light?
yeah, i guess that mine wasn't meant to have the light. however, i did find one in a junkyard though. it is the screw in type. i grabbed it in case anyone on here wanted it, however because it has sat so long, the little tabs that hold the plastic casing around the light have broke off so it don't "lock" into place anymore, however, a little super glue will work just fine on it. I will have pictures later on to post in the classifieds and will attach the link to here to if anyone is interested. it'll be free + shipping or COD. if anyone is interested before I post let me know PM. also, couldn't get all the way back to the harness clip so the wires are just cut (plenty of wire to spare though). if no PM's by the time I get back on here i will just post it in the classifieds.

Ls2, ours is a neon light inside a tube... I replaced that a long time ago with an LED assembly from RadioShack by cutting the connector off of the original and splicing in the new wires. Unfortunately, the bulb assembly I have doesn't shine into the ashtray area (not that I need it to do that anyways... only thing I have down there is my iPod interface connector). What would need to be done to fix this is to make a hole in the lens at the bottom of the cluster trim to mount the lamp to. And of course to not get a blue one... they're pretty dim.

haha i looked and i have one. weird. Never noticed it and not going through the process of putting in a LED. that's not worth my time honestly. might pop it out and clean the lens though.
This is just bizarre - I have never noticed a light on my '88. It's too late to go check but if it's there in the morning I'll flip. I've always thought more light was needed.
BTW - Great weather today for a cruise. 26 miles along the Gulf on Santa Rosa Island - topless of course.

OK, what's the deal. I have it but what's it for? In over 20 years I never noticed any light; and yes it still works. It is more of an obscured indicator light than a functional light.
Here is the 1991 light assembly exploded. I cut the wire to the old bulb to remove it and soldered a new one on then epoxied the wire to the outside of the housing. a 12V LED would fit very nicely in there but I re-did with the same as before.
