1982-1989 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA Custom Cup Holder.

So I was strolling in the automotive isle at Wal-Mart today when I saw a cup holder. It was the fold up style for $4 bucks I thought I'd see what i could do with it.
Got home looked in my car (1988 Trans Am GTA) and saw the perfect place to bolt it right away.
Now it was in the side of my console on the passenger side and I was scared because I didn't want to drill a hole and hit some type of metal or hard plastic and be left with an ugly hole.
Luckily it all went well, and I must say it looks great. Works awesome too
But most of all, it looks factory.

Enjoy guys.

Ya thanks! Just when you drill the holes use on of those plugs you use for dry wall. Then screw the screw into it. Much more clean and will definitely last longer.

Nice! , But why only 82-89? If anything it should read 85-92

90-92 all had cup holders in the door panels. And big cup holders at that.

Ive seen plenty of 90-92s without them. It was also a extremely useless cup holder that GM offered/

Re: 1982-1989 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA Custom Cup Holder.

I've seen more with than without. My '91 T/A had them, so did my bro's 91 Firebird. Useless?? a 44oz big gulp fit in there just fine. Can't say that about any other cars cupholders today. Ever notice how most fast food and stores like circle K and 7-11 cups are smaller in diameter at the bottom, its to fit in 12oz cupholders that are in cars today. 3rd gen cupholders could hold much bigger cups.

Sorry, 90-92 fbird cupholders are the best cupholders in any car. I challenge you to find me one that is better.

Sorry, to hijack, back on subject.

I would have to disagree , they brake really easy is one of the main things. The next is the door panel is no place to have a cup holder ,mainly because you run the risk of your drink all over the fabric.

Best cup holder in any car? You can't be serious...

4thgens cup holder is far superior , my console has 4 from factory. Even Cavaliers have a superior cup holder.

I could go on but this list could get big

Re: 1982-1989 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA Custom Cup Holder.

Fourth gen? You think a small cupholder where you elbow hits the console is better? Right behind the shifter and the TC button? Or the 2 behind the console for the rear passengers that can't hold more than a dixie cup or 12oz soda cans? Thats where I want my drink, behind me. Or the passenger side door cup holder that again can't hold more than an 18oz cup or the other slide out cup holder on the '97+ Fbodies, again on the passenger side? None are on the driver side. And none can't hold large cups. I've owned a '96 Formula, shitty cupholders.

My '97 cavalier didn't have a cup holder that was memorable, and my '97 and '00 GTPs still only had the smaller cheap elboy placed cup holders.

Re: 1982-1989 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA Custom Cup Holder.

Personally my leg hits the door panel all the time , so a door panel cup holder wouldnt fly too well. As for the cavalier well my g/f's 2 door 97 had a cup holder , mainly I was talking about was the generation before that with the pull-out dual cup holder on the dash.

I also don't drink big fat a$$ super gulps from places like 7-11 and circle K Bill and ted anyone?? , the biggest drink my car sees is a large energy drink at best. I prefer the cup holder locations on the 4thgen , also you can always use the swivel one if you don't like the drink in your way. Id also love for you to take a pic of one of the enormous drinks in a thirdgen cup holder , please post it if you can.

Did the factory cupholders work with manual windows ? Will the window crank hit ?

Re: 1982-1989 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA Custom Cup Holder.

I got the same one a couple years ago, that the OP posted. But I used some STRONG 3M doubles sided tape, because I couldn't stand the thought of drilling into the side of my console. And put it on the drivers side.

When I get a 4th gen console, I'll take it off, clean the side of the console & sell the undamaged console.

that interior is awesome I guess I've never studied the GTA interior. I'm surprised it didn't have cup holders on the door panel like the later model non GTA third gens

Re: 1982-1989 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA Custom Cup Holder.

its a nice idea except for the drilling part. too bad it doesnt have a bracket that spans the center console and has a collapseable holder on each side. i just use plastic bottles in my firebird they fit nicely behind the passenger and driver seat in between the seats and center console and just behind the seatbelt holder.

Now this is some funny stuffto take a from what I can tell in the picture, really nice interior and ruin the console with some screws in it,then say how bad the 90-92 cup holder is well I am LMAO and I love my cup holder no problems at all and I have a 5 point roll bar as well that goes right past it.I would be lost without it.

Re: 1982-1989 Firebird/Trans Am/GTA Custom Cup Holder.

Just search for "fold up cup holder" or "Zeta cup holder" on ebay. Looks like a great idea. I might try to find a better way to mount it though. Like run a flat metal bar under the console and bolt it to that. If I do I will post some pictures. I would hate to drill holes in my console and decide later that I don't like the cup holder.

Although I did put a cig lighter plug in the glove box and an ipod jack, to charge my phone and or ipod.

These folding cup holders are common on boats. I bet the ones found from a marine supply place are stronger too. More expensive as well I'm sure.

My console plate wont come off, i took out all the screws and it seems to be getting stuck at the cigarette. Don't have to be so condesending about it.

Step 1. Buy a cup holder. http://www.firstchoicemarine.com/p-1...-50091015.aspx

Step 2. Get some super strong 3M tape and mount the cup holder to whichever location you desire. http://www.autogeek.net/3m-auto-tape.html
Drilling screw holes in your interior to secure your cup holder is another option if you're ok with doing that.

Step 3. Buy your favorite beverage, take a few sips and then place the cup or bottle in your new cup holder.

Step 4. Take pictures of your drink in your new cup holder and then post the pictures here.

Guys - I own a boat, and they(marine stores) have some really aggressive Velcro at the marine stores that will no fail.

I think its a better alternative than screws and holes ...

Great idea - thanks for posting it. I hate putting my coffee in the console.
