I have opted to go without back seats in my 86 TA and I was just wondering if anyone else has done the same and what they used to fill that space? I have thought about speakers, but maybe there is something more conventional I could put there. Please if you have pics of what you have done please post them up I would love to see. Thanks for the help

i dont remember the thread, but there are these extra storage boxes that u can put in their place.. they look really sharp imo
those look just like a set i bought a few years ago, probably the same guy, but who knows.
they were total crap, garbage. the didn't fit well, the carpet covering is really cheap, and the construction was pathetic. You can make your own for less. Besides they were made from particle board, which is really heavy, they probably weighed more than the seats.
unless you run a piece of sheet across the floor and cut out the stock metal, just run a rear seat.
if you are worried about weight, get rid of the stock frame and just put the cover over the foam and velcro it in place.
my entire rear set weighs 12 pounds. stock was 28. this is a 4th gen one piece backrest.
Not worried about the weight I was just curious to see if anyone else has wen seatless and what they use to fill the space. I have seen some really nice speaker box designs but that is a lot of speaker for a car like that
mine were sorta purpose and accidental. i thought bout yanking mine but just didnt, went auto-xin and all loose objest hadta go and the nut that the base is bolted down with was gone so i yanked the basses and leaving the back rest woulda looked silly so they went as well.
been gone for a few years and wouldnt have it any other way. i want to add one of the hatch shades but without a back seat it looks silly so i'll just go without.
why not just remove the shoulder belts and lay the back rest down and leave it there?? gives ya cargo room and its easy to reverse if you change your mind.
I pulled the back seats, seat-belts and mounts from my 2000 Z28 and put my nitrous-bottle and sub-tube back there. I know it's not a 3rdGen, but just an idea...
Just leave an empty space, that's what I did when I unbolted my backseats. I had a few friends sit in the empty space where the backseats used to be, they said it was even more comfortable.
Then again, I had the extremely crazy idea of cutting the "hump" in the hatch area down a good six inches, weld some sheet metal into the back seat area, and put in a bed!
I could have a couple girls lay back there if I wanna go to the track, use them as ballast for some decent traction!
But seriously, go with what your personal likes, and budget allows. Them little storage boxes are neat, but I wouldn't waste the cash on them.

I would never pull out my back seats. It's too much fun watching people get in and out of the back! If I ever did take them out though, it looks like a great spot for a good sound system, NOS and any other gizmos and reclaim the boot space.

I didn't pull out just my backseats, but, today I got done gutting the whole interior.
Yeah, lots of leg room.

oo cloth gta seats, cant say I see those too often . Cloth>leather imo.
On topic, I put "new" carpet in my car and havent put the back seats back in. Partially because they are in crappy shape but unless I find a set of full 4th gen seats (for about the same price as just fronts) when it comes time to do seats, Ill probably look at different options.
I commonly have a dog in my car commuting to/from work so I was thinking of making a cover for the passenger side back seat area that levels it with the drive shaft hump and then making it slope down to just the other side of the metal hump on the other side. A full piece flush with the tunnel would make it too hard for my dog to get in and out. I may also opt for the one side thing and just remove the seat hump on the drivers side and carpet the spot.
I don't like that I have to plan around a dog but to the same end, this isnt my daily driver so I dont have to plan around passengers either. Everybody has their own needs or preferences when it comes to something like this so a lot of people will do a lot of different things.
Here's a drawing I made of my idea, and yes those are stink lines lol.
thanks for the compliments... i weighed the back seats and they dont weigh much at all so i folded my seats down...i bought the cloth material at k mart for like twenty bucks... its the same color as my interior really the camera just makes it look different.... then i just shaped it out and tucked it up as you can see around the corners and jammed it into the gaps of the interiors peices where they connect together... took me a good day to cut it and make it look like it came that way..... feels very solid and it doesnt move or blow off..... i put my groceries and stuff on there....

Mouse bi-products would not be good either, but the PO of my TA stored it for 5 years after a tsunami like downpour so it had the nasty musty smell. So my genius *** thought why not shampoo the carpet so I did and to my surprise mixing the musty smell with the carpet shampoo makes a cat piss smell it was wonderful so I ripped it all out and now I am starting over. I like the beach chair idea though
Mouse bi-products are horrible for me, considering we have been renting since we moved to Delaware, a little over two years ago. The rent is $950 just for a small 2 bedroom, you'd think the house would be mouse-free. It'll be time to pack up and head out soon.
I want a completely enclosed garage, before I go and drop over a grand on interior alone. I learned my lesson about living within a mile or two of a few farms.

That's why I came up with the plan to relocate the gas tank, or buy a fuel cell, and cut the hump down about 8 inches, to be even with the backseat. It would be flat all the way back, yet it would not be TOO wide, the suspension is mounted on that hump, although it would still run evenly with the backseats.
If someone was to do this while relocating the suspension mounts, it would turn out exactly like a Fox Body Mustang's hatch area, which is really neat IMHO.

But that would mean new, shorter rear shocks, or some kind of cantilever design. Then there are the the seats where the rear springs set. You can only go so far down.
Then there are the interior plastics. Lowering the floor, means the plastics would no longer reach.

I think his plan was to leave everything from the inside area of the upper shock mount and out stock, but that 3'-3.5' area in the middle is what he wants to lower. This would mean the stock plastics would be just fine where they are and the shocks can stay put. Though the bigger issue is where the gas tank would go. Since your dropping the floor ~8 inches your only going to have ~4" of room for the gas tank which means you should just relocate it. If you were to do that, I say it should go in the deep area way at the back of the car, but it should be a plastic fuel cell and you should build a mini cage around it to help protect it in the event of a crash. This should provide enough volume for a good sized fuel cell and still be flush with the height you want. If he would want to widen the area so the vertical sides of his new bed are even with the stock plastics, I have an idea for a cantilever setup.
I'm not sure if he has thought of this yet or not, but you would have to build a brace for the back of the back seats. That hump that he plans on cutting out is essentially a rest for the seat to be placed on. IIRC, the back of the back seats is only particle board with foam over top of it. With the hump gone people will end up braking the back seat and get hurt.
The other thing I'm curious about is why someone would even go through all this work and still leave the back seats in. If the person wants that clean look the Mustangs have, he should just buy a Mustang. This is not a simple modification by any stretch of the imagination. You are basically going to be cutting out half the frame and relocating it and since this is a unibody car, that is no easy feat. You're going to need all kinds of bracing and tons of measure and tack welds and more measuring and more measuring and some more tack welds... oh, did I say your going to have to measure it? Seriously, though... if you try this and it isn't perfectly square, you just messed up the chassis permanently.
I'm not trying to scare you away from doing this (and based on your other posts about I doubt I am), I'm just trying to give you and everyone else that sees you post this idea a hint at how hard this will be.

One is that the cargo area on the Mustang meets about half way up to the back of the front seats which means it's higher than the F-body's platform anyways.
I'm not an expert, but IMO lowering the center portion of the hump may compromise its structural integrity. From what I see this would be important in case of a side impact protecting people from becoming crushed and also for strength in between the spring mounts. Triangulate where the body rests on the suspension and the difference in how you're looking to modify the hump area. It's like you're creating a new way for the body to flex and you don't have a computer program as the designers did to be able to tell what the results will be. Those compound shapes provide strength to otherwise flimsy sheet metal.

Hey Stephen, do you have any pictures of the actual back seat area of the car? I want to know how the factory rear plastics looked along the floor. I also want to see the carpet. Basically just post as many pictures of it as you can. Please....?
The first pic is the only fitment issue that i had, its just a little bunched up. The second pic is a bigger issue. There is a seat bracket there and i have it removed. The first time i ordered the carpet i explained to the salesman that i wanted the 3rd gen carpet , but i wanted the rear of the front piece extended to mimic 4th gen carpet and no cutouts. He said no problem.I got standard 3rd gen carpet with no cutouts.Well i at least test fit it to see how it looked.3rd gen carpet has to be cut to fit over these lower rear seat brackets and it fit great, but for the money i spent it should have been what i ordered so i sent it back and ordered 4th gen carpet.Well the 4th gen carpet is molded to fit over those brackets.I don't think it looks that bad and i was working out of town at the time i got sick of dicking around with ACC and just kept it.I would recomend 3rd gen carpet and get it extended for those of you that want to do this
This is where the 4th gen carpet ends. I cant remember if i had to ask for the trim on the edge.I don't know why it's curling up,dose anyone know how to fix this? Oh yeah the lower rear interior panels that come from cars with rear shoulder belts do not have seatbelt cutouts.
