Vaccum routing for GTA seats

I'm just finishing up reupholstering my GTA seats with the black hampton vinyl covers from hawks. They look awesome and I'm almost ready to put them back in the car. However, I need some help with the vaccum lines that go to the the inflatable lumbar and sides. On the passengers seat there is simply one vac line with a connector that goes to a vac line under the seat. The drivers seat has the same line coming out of the carpet under the seat. However the line coming from the seat splits off at a T. One side has the connector for the line coming out of th carpet but the other side is just cut off. I can't see anywhere that this line is supposed to go but obviously the inflatable lumbar wont work unless the vacuum is a closed system. Can anyone help me out? The seats were out of the car when I bought it so I'm not sure how it was originally set up.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Sorry I can't help you with your problem but I also have an 88 GTA and yesterday I took the cheap seatcovers off that came with the car and was checking the fit of some junkyard sails when I noticed 2 tubes going from the bottom of the drivers seat to the top. I thought they were wire casings and was wondering what they were for. Does that mean I have inflatable lumbars as well and if so, how do you inflate them? I can check the routing of the tubes under the seat for you tomorrow if you don't have an answer by then.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Yes those two tubes are for the inflatable lumbar. They are controlled by the switches on the plastic piece on the side of the seat. those tubes go to a little pump that is mounted under the seat. The other line that I am wondering about comes off of the same pump (it has 3 hose ports on it) and then Tees off. I know one side of the T plugs into a hose coming out of the carpet. If you could check how yours is set up and let me know what the other side is supposed to go to that would be awesome. If you need some help with your seats let me know. I just took mine all the way down to the metal and foam so I'm pretty familar with them now. If anyone else can help me figure out where these vac lines go please help me out. Thanks.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

I will be happy to check it for you. Will I be able to see it with a flashlight and my face planetd on the carpet or will I have to remove the seat?

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

No you don't need to take the seat out but you'll probably need to move it all the way forward. If you can find the black rubber hose that comes out of the carpet (it will be next to some wires also coming out of the carpet) you should be able to trace it up to the part where it Tees off. Thanks for your help!

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Since I don't need to remove the seat I just ran out there at lunchtime and looked underneath. I have one dangling hose also. Mine has what looks like half of an inline fuseholder on the end and it is just laying on the floor. I can't see very well under there but is it possible that is the new air intake for the pump? Maybe a filter goes on there or something? Do you have the fuseholder looking thing on yours?

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Or maybe it is an exhaust for when you deflate the seat? Anyhow, I tried my switches and they are not doing anything with the key in the run position or the off position. Another thing for me to fix. I did find an ignition cylinder under there so the car was prob stolen before.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Thanks for checking. Yeah I have the same fuse holder and a couple other electrical connectors. Maybe the other hose is to pull in or vent air. I hadn't thought of that. Once I get the seats in I'll let you know what I figure out if I get it working.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

I only have one end of the fuse holder showing. Where is the male end located. I can take some pics tomorrow if it will be helpful.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

There isn't a male end for the fuse holder. It just holds a fuse, nothing plugs in to it. There is another electrical connector with a male and female end that connects the wiring on the bottom of the seat to the wiring harness under the carpet. It has four wires. If there is no fuse in your fuse holder put one in and see if your seats work. If youre missing the fuse you've got an open circuit.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

It's the old style fuse holder, that holds a glass tube type fuse. There has to be another end somewhere. I will check it out in detail tomorrow and post pics of what I find.

Thanks for the link. I didnt notice and fuse holders like that on my seats. I'll check out the pics once you post them and see if I can find the same thing on my seats.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

i just went out and checked it again as best as I could see. I found a square whitish electrical connector unplugged, a square black electrical connector unplugged, a 10 AMP blade type fuse holder with a fuse in it, and the half of old-style fuse holder I mentioned earlier is definitely on the end of the hose coming from the tee, not off a wire. It sounds like you may be missing that part. If I can find the other end of it tomorrow, then that will be where you hose needs to hook up.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Oh I think what you're talking about as far as the fuse holder is actually just a connector for the hose. One side of the hose (after it Tees) has a female connector on the end. The male end is on the hose that comes out of the carpet next to the wires. I know those hook together. On the other side of the T I've got nothing. Just about six inches of hose but it doesn't go anywhere and it doesn't have a connector. Is that the same thing you've got?

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

If anyone else has an actual working set of AQ9 seats in their car please feel free to weigh in and let us know if we're on the right track. Thanks.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

The end that's dangling on my hose is the one with the connector. I should be able to see where the other one goes after I remove the seat. I can't tell, at least I don't think so at this point, where it goes because of so little clearance under the seat. I'm working 14 hours today but will def check it out sometime tomorrow and let you know.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Okay Hiflyer, this is what I got. The first pic shows what is coming out of the carpet under the drivers seat. As you can see, I have 2 electrical connectores, one white and 1 black, along with the hose I assume is from the passenger seat.

The second picture shows what is on the seat bottom. Obviously the mates for everything coming out of the carpet.

The third picture is the tee in question I pressume.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

The first pic shows the overall routing of the vacuum lines from the tee. The end that connects to the passenger seat is out of frame at the bottom. If you follow it closely, you will see that the hose going straight through the tee from the passenger seat goes to a large black box mounted very low at the front of the seat. The end that tees off goes to a smaller black box, center of three connections, mounted high inside the driver's seat.

The second picture shows a close up of the large box connection.

The third pic shows a close up of the small box connection.

Is there anything else you would like me to check or photograph before I start to reassemble the seat?

Oh btw, I found 30 cents...yeehaw!

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

Hey thanks for the pics man. My problem is pretty clear now. I'm missing that large black box. Any idea what that is or what it's called. Air pump maybe?

No idea, but I will go out to see if there are any numbers on it. Do you have the electrical connection for it?

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

It's def the pump. I hooked everything up and tested it and that is where all the noise is coming from. I can feel the vibration in it also. No numbers on it. The first pic is the view from under the seat so you can see how it mounts. The second if from the front of the seat, a kind of drivers floor view if the seat was installed. Mine works fine. I'm going to go put it back in now before it rains.

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

I do have the electrical connector for it. That definately explains why I couldn't find anywhere that it looked like that other hose might go. I'm thinking that is going to be a junk yard only part. Well at least I know what I need now. Thanks for the pics and all your help. So are your seats working now?

Re: Vaccum routing for GTA seats

No problem. Glad I could help. My seats work fine. The lumbar on the passenger seat wasn't working, the pump would turn on but turn right off again. I read on here that it has a pressure switch that shuts it off. I found the hose between the seat and seat back was kinked. After a little finagling, it works.
