full interior roll cage with t-tops

So im going to be putting a full cage in my 92 bird that has t-tops. Looked threw lots of threads and can't find any pics of someone that has done it. Anyone for pics? My concern is the bar top side bars running along the window and t-tops, will i still be able to get the t-tops off cuz of release handle location? IV also seen in a old magazine i had( can't find it) of a 3rd Gen camaro that the top of the cage ran complete around the t-tops, anyone seen that before? This is for a street car so im not worried about passing any kind of tech inspection for racing.

Anything would help

Re: full interior roll cage with t-tops

I did it in my 85 TA. I race it and drive it on street a lot . Best advice is DO NOT use a kit. Find a willing fabricator and have him bend the bars as close as he can get them. I had even gutted the t top mechanisms to try and get them closeer but there was no need. The cage is tight and I can get the tops off if needed. I kept my original full interior and it all blends nice and is legal to 8.50. You may use the bars in rear from kit but the halo over you head MUST be made if you want it tight. install the 6 point part then have a bar bent from rear hoop, run it along the t-tops (take the handle and plastic off and trim some extra space inside then heat plastic around bar back on t-top), run it through dash to floor. then run a bar above windshied from side to side. Hard to explain i know, but look at a lot of quality race cars and you will get an idea of what is good compared to what sucks.

Putting a cage in a street car is unnecessary, hazardous, and likely illegal depending on where you live.

Glad someone backed me up on this one lol. Cages are meant to be used in conjunction with harnesses and HELMETS (have fun wearing a helmet every time you run to the grocery store!)

Re: full interior roll cage with t-tops

I agree that a 10 point is dangerous on a street car. I have also heard that if it is illegal along with even brand new 5 point harness aren't DOT. I have also hit my head a few times......but my car runs 8's in the quarter, so I cant take it out. Guess its the chance i take. My friends and I discuss it from time to time. I would not put one in if you are just doing it for the looks. I hide as much stuff as possible in my car. I made the window net removable, the parachute removable, switch the wheels and tires from bias 15" to radial 17", but the cage has to stay per NHRA.

Re: full interior roll cage with t-tops

An 8-point roll cage is stupid without a helmet and a harness whenever you're in it. My opinion.

A 6-point is stupid without a helmet and a harness if you're not racing and you're not regulationally bound to installing one. You're safer without it if you're not wearing a helmet and a harness (ie you're street driving), IMO. And even then, I'm not sure I'd be willing to do a harness without some kind of neck protection to keep me from breaking my neck in an accident, and all of those neck support devices rely on a helmet to work properly.

If you want to die in a fender bender from blunt head trauma or violent neck injuries, then that's your prerogative but at least be aware that that's what you're risking.
