Shifter **** Removal?

How do I remove my shifter ball ****? I want to remove the console on my 1983 Berlinetta with a 305/700R4. The **** is round with the push button release sticking out of the top of it. It is already cracked like the previous owner might have tried to mess with it. I've tried unscrewing it but while it turns, it does not seem to be unthreading. I've found the set screw on the emergency brake lever, but I don't see anything like that on the shift ****.

Their's a clip in the front of the shifter, pull the handle down to low and you will see it,it looks like a large staple

Re: Shifter **** Removal?

If you have a ball type, I think you remove the button (it pulls off) and underneath you'll find a snap ring.

Re: Shifter **** Removal?

Thanks for the help guys. Mine is like the drawing on the right- smooth plastic ball, no leather cover or anything. And I don't see any clip or staple or anything so it looks like it has the snap ring down inside. When I tried pulling the release button out, it didn't seem like it wanted to pop out, but I'll try again since I now think I know how it should work.
