Mouse. In my car.

Yesterday I took my car out of storage to enjoy the warm weather, stretch it's legs a bit. Prior to storage I had cleaned her up, filled the interior and under the hood with dryer sheets, and made sure the windows were up, etc. It also sat under a car cover (props to evo, the thing was BONE DRY under there, and this was a pretty hard winter).

What do I find in my passenger seat but a nice bunch of mouse turds and a good portion of the foam from my passenger seat. yup. I looked and never found the critter, no holes in the carpet, or anything obvious. The other seats appeared to be fine. Started the car up, let it run, everything seemed to work fine (thankfully). Did a short drive around town, picked up a poison trap, and parked it again. I replaced the dryer sheets and put the trap in the seat. I hope to have caught the thing in a couple of days. We'll see.

Needless to say, in the future I will always include a mousetrap on my storage list.

So glad that it didn't get into any electronics.

On a happier note it was great to pop the tops out and cruise!

Well that sux! Try to do your best and that happens! The thing about a posion trap is that if the critter is still in the car and eats the poison and dies in there, you'll need to fine him quick before he get RIPE, if ya know what I mean !

Re: Mouse. In my car.

Mice also hate mint. I put some mint oil in a baby food jar with couple holes poked in the lid and leave it in the car during times when I know it will be sitting (like winter!) A little bit goes a long way and your car smells nice to boot!

Re: Mouse. In my car.

Instead of poison, try the sticky traps with a dab of peanut butter in the middle. You know exactly where he will be.

Re: Mouse. In my car.

I keep cotton ***** in a cup soaked in peppermint in my RV while not in use. A trick I learned on my RV forum. My house is surrounded by open grassy fields so I keep a mouse and rat trap in my garage 24/7. You got lucky, we once had mice get into a hunting jeep at our camp some years ago. They set up their household in the ac/heater vents and on the intake. They also chewed up the wiring in the engine compartment. Damn jeep caught on fire even after cleaning and repairing the wiring. Wasted a lot of good beer putting out that fire as we were out in the brush and it's all we had to pour on it.

Re: Mouse. In my car.

The poison causes the mice to bleed out internally. The first symptom they feel is overwhelming thirst which makes them go outside to find water. I have never found the mouse body inside one if my vehicles since using the poison. I once found one on the door sill, he didn't quite make it out.
There is no substitute for poison if you want to keep the mice out. As the OP found out, nothing deters them, you have to KILL them. A really good barn cat can also do the job.

Re: Mouse. In my car.

stealtht/a...Thanks for that description of how a mouse dies after eating poison! I'll have my morning muffin now! I'm not a animal activist by no means but that is why I don't like the poison or those sticky pads; slow death. I like the good ol spring traps....

SNAP.......done!

Now, where's that blueberry muffin?

Re: Mouse. In my car.

Traps work great too, but you have to check them frequently during the moving times.
Best bait for traps is peanut butter cap'n crunch. Animals go crazy for that ****.
I think I was a cat in another life, I have no problem with torturing mice to death.

Oh, that's the most frustrating part, there's a cat that frequents the area.

Good to know about that poison though, good stuff.

Re: Mouse. In my car.

i read your post this morning and didnt comment. i was just working on my camaro and thought about critters. nope, no evidence. get ready to pull a plug wire and theres a 4-5" spider camolaged in my header wrap, lol. i dont think they bite but he got sprayed with bug spray and ran under the car, lol.

reminded me of an old time. brother-in-law was under a car working. sees a big spider,...kinda yells and bumps his head under the car,...then hits his head on the concrete.

we get rats and mice but they havent gotten my car yet. i have spring traps everywhere inside and out of our home.
i do agree about the poison. a friend poisoned some, then they died in her attic and stunk the house up bad.

i got a spare seat id give you if you were closer. doubt its worth shipping?

Ha, yea, the barn I used to have the car in had a bad black widow problem...so it used to be pretty nerve racking anytime you had to reach anywhere that you couldn't shine a flashlight lol.

I appreciate the offer, but nah, i'm not that worried about it at the moment. The seat can still be sat in, and eventually I'm going to swap some aftermarket seats in the front and recover the rears to match (ideally).

Next free day I get I'm going to figure out where the critter got in at and plug that hole up.
