New project underway
Hi All,
It has begun! I just picked up my car! It is a 1992 3.1L camaro with 5 speed. My dad owned it from day 1. 177,000 miles later and still on the same clutch! That is how much he babied the thing! The body is in good shape but obviously the motor is going to have to go along with the tranny! So I will be doing the Lt1 swap! I am getting the engine and tranny (T56) and ecm, wiring harness, etc. for 2600$. Then I plan on getting forged pistons, crank (to support turbo/nitro) , new rear end, and suspension from Spohn/Hawks, build the engine up outside the car then put it in and wire it up! I have 2 people helping me with this project so hope to finish within a month after I pick up the motor. Im laid off so lots of time!
I will post pics of the progress so everyone can see the transformation. With the help of this forum and a little bit o luck, hope to finish everything smoothly with little headache.

Re: New project underway
Ive been really considering that option, but could never find a good deal on the LS with tranny combo for a good price. Most were 4500$. So i figured get 1 combo for 2600$ for everything including pedals, shifter, ecm, harness, etc. and use the xtra 1500$ i saved to get the crank, pistons, etc.

Re: New project underway
you should really consider the ls1 t56 setup. and $4500 is a bit pricy. i sell lots of pullouts, and mine usually sell anywhere from $3200-$3800+shipping depending on mileage. $4500 is pretty high. if you are interested in buying a setup, hit me up, i will give you an idea of what i can get you one for. I would highly recomend it over the lt1, just my $.02 though.

Is there something wrong with the Lt1? I know the Ls1 is a stong engine, and I have nothing but respect for it, but I am also just looking for the 400-450 hp range. I drive the car everyday and am just looking for a strong engine to have a little fun with and is reliable.

opti's are known for failing on the lt1 and it is old technology. I don't see a benefit to them when the ls based motors are dropping in price and most 5.3L iron motors will put out more power than a lt1 engine. Just a FYI for that price you could almost buy an entire lt1 car part out what you want and keep the rest. A dependable 5.3L/5.7L, etc ls based swap isn't too pricey, it's the T56 that drives the cost up considerably.

Re: New project underway
LS1's tend to be more expensive, as their radically different from the gen 1. Meaning parts like headers, and intakes dont fit.
However, LS1's take advantage of new age computer modelling techniques, and if they were a less then spectacular motor, they wouldnt be powering all vette's from 97+, F-bodys from 98+ and trucks from 99+.
They might be a little more expensive to swap, but the return in fuel milage, ease of building power, smooth cruising etc, will make it more then worth it.
Ill say i dont regret a penny i put into my car. I might regret my cam choise, but ill know more once i get miles on the car
