Emission questions

For all you LS swap guys, what are u doing about emissions? Here in Delaware my 91 Z has to go through emissions every two years and they do the tail pipe sniffer, which I usually have trouble with, (non-stock, HSR, etc) but with some tweaking can get to pass. Anyone have a LS based swap and have to do the sniffer, and do u pass?? I am looking at a swap but would like to know if anyone can get a LS motor through a sniffer.

Thanks

If all you need is to pass a sniffer to the standards of the 91 model year, you shouldn't have any trouble doing that with an LS1 and a couple of Magnaflow spun cats.

They do sniffer, sound check, visual for cats with a mirror, and vapor canister, they do open the hood but have not said anything about the big burgundy painted plenum on top of the motor (HSR) or anything else visual under the hood, thank god, lol.

Re: Emission questions

Well, if they check for a vapor canister as well, you'll need a 4th gen tank but the rest I would do like five7 said, just make sure you have all 4 O2 sensors hooked up.

If they're just looking for a vapor canister, the 3rd gen unit should meet that need. That would be simpler than telling them, "It's on the fuel tank."

Re: Emission questions

True, I was just thinking about the wiring for it, but then again he would have to run wiring to the back.

Re: Emission questions

Well being that I'm a Smog Tech in CA.... I'll chime in. Not sure about Delaware BUT, A legal engine swap in CA requires all emissions components from the vehicle that the engine came from to be present and in working order on the vehicle that it is swapped into. On a Smog check in CA we do a Tailpipe(Sniffer), visual, and functional check (OBDII scan). An engine swap also must be certified by the state Referee and a BAR label affixed to the doorpost of the vehicle. Not sure about Delaware though. Just my

This link isn't what I was looking for but it will tell you some of what CA says: http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...uidelines.html

Re: Emission questions

for a cam to test clean in an LSx, it needs to have 4 degrees of non-overlap at 0.050". A TR220 on a 112, or a TR224 on a 114 would both test clean. Any cam more aggressive will probably fail.

I believe I have the same sniffer test here in TX. I passed just fine after some new CATS.
