Donor Car

I definitely want an LS1/T56. I'm undecided on whether I should buy a complete pullout or try to find a high mileage or wrecked 4th gen and use it as a donor car. Who has bought a 'donor car' for their LS1 swap? how much did you pay? Was it wrecked? Was it worth the work? how much did you net from selling the shell and other parts from it?

FYI: I'm trying to decide whether I should sell my thirdgen and buy a 4th gen camaro or T/A (always liked the T/A's) or do the swap. It seems like I'll be putting just as much money into my 3rd gen as it would cost to buy an already modded 4th gen. I have the space & ability to do the swap but time to do the swap is becoming more scarce.

Re: Donor Car

if you can find a decent donor, that will be the cheapest route. there are lots of little things that you won't have to track down one at a time too, which makes it easier.

as far as swap or just get a 4th gen, thats all personal opinion. a 4th gen will end up cheaper, probably by a significant amount. i had a third gen, and i much prefer the looks of my 91 to the 4th gens.

Re: Donor Car

If you have an opportunity to buy a wrecked ls1 fbody, and have the space to store one don't pass up on it. Prices will vary $2-3500 depending on damage, mods, mileage, etc.

I picked up my wrecked 98 WS6 for $2500 made back about $2800. Thats without the shed full of parts I still have from it plus the parts off the 3rd gen I need to sell. For the record I still have for the swap: LS1/T56, complete dash/console, Z06 rims w/285's, C6 Z06 front brakes, UMI panhard bar, UMI rear lower control arms, rear Koni's, aluminum driveshaft, . No doubt I got a great deal, but they're out there.

It actually took me a while to part out and get rid of the car, but I'm lazy (hence why I haven't finished my swap yet).

Damage doesn't look too bad but the frames all jacked up.

Wow! What all did you sell to make that kind of money back?

Re: Donor Car

I pretty much took off anything I could. 4th gen parts are freaking expensive. Most of the big money parts were: seats, hatch, rearend, door panels/entire interior panels, ws6 airbox, carpet, 1 taillight, side mirrors, strano springs, FIPK intake, Koni struts. Thats about 2k right there.
