purchasing a ls1?

Hey guys, just wanted some final info and to see if it's worth it.
Found a 02 from a f body 89k miles for 2000.

The good:
Should have ls6 intake and decent mileage
Come with harness for a auto.

The bad:
No trans
No ecm
No pulleys other than ac. But that I will sell.

Only questions I have are. What is the # (s) to confirm that it is a ls6 intake and where do I find it on the intake?

Lastly the ecm. Does it have to be a 02 ls1 or can it be say a 5.3 ecm? Or what are my options? And tuning. No1 is really willing to tune here so are there good places I can at least get a tune to get her running? If not a good place I can get a good tune from?

Thanks for your guys time. I just want to know what you guys would do. I'm leaning to getting g it if it is a ls6 intake and the ecm works out. But would like some final input b4 I unload 2000 bucks

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Checking out ls1tech. No egr is easiest way plus I got some part numbers. So I think I got that figured out. Just need the tuning part. Once I get some time I'll try to find it on here I'm sure it's there lol

Re: purchasing a ls1?

01-02 fbody LS6 intake is 12561184.
Z06 Ls6 is 12573572.

Also don't go just by no EGR as vettes did not have EGR's even the LS1 intakes.

The Fbody and Vortec stuff is also pinned differently but Fbody PCM's are pretty simple to find for around $100 bucks. As are 4l60e's. They are pretty cheap to find.

Accessories can get pricey though. Rock auto is a great place to start. i think waterpumps, balancer, alternator and power steering pumps can all be had under $100 each. Its the brakets that get costly.

Personally I dont think an incomplete LS1 is worth $2000. when you can buy a complete running Iron 4800-5300-6000 (4.8-5.3-6.0) Truck motor for like $300-600 with similar mileage. 6.0L's have gone up in price it seems though. The bonus of an LS1 is mainly only the aluminum block.

Does the motor have everything else? Coils? Sensors etc?

Re: purchasing a ls1?

As far as i know yes, Basically what i was thinking after i talked some more about it. He found a 5.3 as well so i might just jump on that. Being as this will be my first swap i might just throw a cam and headers at it and call it a day till i can get a new project. This one will probably be the wifes car once i get a new project anyways. My main concern in general is just tuning. I cant seem to find a good tuner close to me in N.E ohio. I didnt know if sending it out is a good option either.

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Well for tuning if its something simple like a vats delete, small cam etc there are many mail order tune places.

Wiring the harness isnt a big deal either way. Just do some reading on lt1swap.com. TONS of great info there.

Like I said most accessories can be bought fairly new for a decent price. Some people think LS1 Fbody Pans and accessories are gold. Also should add the vortec motors would need the Fbody pan as well. So if you can find a complete longblock for around 2k that's not too bad.

I got lucky and found someone selling Corvette accessories complete minus balancer for $150 on here. So keep your eye on the for sale section as well
There are ways to modify the truck accessories but imo it looks hacked/ugly. I was going to try that route and didnt care for the looks nor the small amount of belt wrap on the crank.

If you had to buy the Fbody oil pan buy it from or at least price match to superchevyperformance.com. By far the cheapest around $250 complete with windage and pickup tube.

Another option which isnt a bad one is buy a wrecked 99-02 LS1 car. Seen some pretty damn cheap ones. Then after parting them out sometimes you can be ahead.

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Yea ls1s are gold around here. JY is the best bet for even crashed ones are alot still. Hopefully some1 from the area can chime in and find me a local speed. I'm not afraid to drive or even haul it a few hrs away. Not sure why I can't find any1 nearby.

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Its the same way around here. Unless I cross the border which is close, I wont find an F-body in a scrap yard anywhere. I guess the all get shipped to Toronto when crashed from what a local JY told me

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Sounds about right. Really trying to figure things out cant find a good trans for my car right now. People are low balling everything i want to sell and asking for a hefty price for what i want to buy. I'm really ready to jump on a Ls platform but to find a deal on one seems to be a rare thing.

Re: purchasing a ls1?

I paid $1500 for my '98 5.7L LS1, with harness (not 100% complete), computer, accessories (minus A/C) and factory car manifolds. Seemed like a good deal, but I've never heard it run so who knows.

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Good to know. The first one i found was a 98 with motor and trans with harness and ecm for 2000. Wasnt 100% on a ls at that time lol. Brother from JY called said they have a 04 envoy 4x4 with a 5.3 priced @ 800 bucks for harness and ecm. I know i need a new pan, intake, and accessories. Then a 4l60e thats not a 4x4 lol. Will this work guys? Or will i need to find something else?

Re: purchasing a ls1?

A few years back you could find 5.3L engines for <$500 regularly. I used to see them on ebay for $300 all the time from local JY's.

Intake, Accessories, Manifolds/Headers, Waterpump, Coils (unless you A/C Delete), and pan are the items I think off the top of my head. I didn't do the swap in my car, but I remember researching it quite extensively for a while.

I also seem to think you can use the 4x4 transmission with an F-body tail shaft, but i'm no where near 100% on that one. Cheapest way to go is to find a wrecked LS1 powered F-body and swap over EVERYTHING that you want, harness, engine, transmission, radiator, coolant tank, transmission, etc etc etc. But those can be hard to come by, I'd definitely check auctions such as copart.com

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Basically everything up here gets shipped off. Most guys around her won't step away from the old school stuff. Only ever seen one ls swapped car. It was bone stock and he thought he was the coolest guy in the world. I have seen a few crashed ones but they're easily 6000 on up. I just don't have that kind of cash. Finding a new trans isn't bad at all and basically that's all I can think that needs swapped. I did read that I may need to change the injector plugs if I switch to a ls1 intake? I do think I'm going to grab this one up. Plus I can here it run b4 I get it.

Re: purchasing a ls1?

Went ahead and grabbed the motor. Harness ecm and motor for 800 tax included. Once I get it I'll probably start a long build thread. Thanks for the input guys. And hope to see ya around!
