86 Iroc with Heritage stripes?

Hey guys,
I've been looking around on the web for a racing stripe similar to the 92 Heritage style, but with sections cut out to fit around the hood louvers on an '86 Iroc-Z. I've seen some online with the heritage stripes, but never really got an answer from anyone about how they did it.

I tried looking around through the site and google, and didn't have any luck really, I found one picture that is exactly what I'm talking about though.

Anyways, does anyone have any advice or knowledge on this topic?
I assumed if I were to take the louvers off, put the stripes on and cut out
around where the louvers go that would work fine, but that sounds horribly
messing and possibly disastrous to the end result. I'm planning on putting
black heritage stripes on a white 86 iroc-z just like the one in this picture.

Damn!!! Looking at that pic makes me want to get herritage stripes on my white vert

Anyways they probably just cut em like that. Show the pic to your body work/painting/stripe putting on guy, tell him what you want or try it yourself.

Yeah, they're sick looking, that's why I was trying to find out how they did it.

Yeah I'll probably just find a custom auto-body shop and ask around, I doubt it's all that difficult to do.

I don't have the louver thingys to worry about, so that makes my job easier. I'll probably get em from hawks when i get my bodywork doe

Re: 86 Iroc with Heritage stripes?

id dry fit everything. without taking the backing of the decals lay them out on ur car where you want them to lay and with automotive tape, tape em down so they dont move. id prob do this with the louvers off. then trace the area where the louvers are and then cut the piece with scissors. that way you can work off the car and get a nice clean cut.
or figure out wher the louvers will be place compared to the decals. then lay the decals out somewhere flat and put the louvers on top and trace cut and there you go

hope that helps.

Re: 86 Iroc with Heritage stripes?

That's actually a real clever idea, my way would've been twice as hard.
xD

I'm still looking around my state/neighboring states to find an IROC or Z28 I really want, but once I get one I know for a fact I want heritage stripes and an IROC hood.

How did you you that exactly? That's basically exactly what I want to do but with the louvers instead of the power blisters.

Re: 86 Iroc with Heritage stripes?

The blisters of course are factory. I had a set of vinyl stripes, and the guy that did them took a pattern off of the internet and cut them out of the heritage pattern, and they were squared off at both corners. Then when the car was painted, the paint guys laid the stripes out similar to what I had, but added in the modern rounded/squared off finish on their own, I did not tell them to do it, and did not know till I saw it in paint. They were looking out for me for sure, and I like the results, plus the clear got screwed up so they are under like 6 coats, you can barely feel them. And yes they are painted stripes.

Re: 86 Iroc with Heritage stripes?

With vinyl stripes, you have the right idea to lay them down then cut out the louvered area. Trying to cut the stripes first then lay them on means they have to be laid down PERFECT.

I've done well over a hundred cars & trucks professionally with graphics & such. Getting stuff laid down correctly isn't a problem for me, yet I would still do it via lay & cut.

The method laying it out where you want it & using a good tape to create a "hinge", is pretty much the only to do it right & be happy with the results.

The first set were vinyl, laid out on the factory paint, and laser cut from a pro who does vinyl graphics, the set you see in the photo above were laid out by the body shop guys who did the body and paint, and the estimator at the dealer happens to be the vinyl graphics guy as well, so they went to him and got the original vinyl pattern he used, and modified it accordingly before spraying them on the hood!!! Make sense!!
