problems with buying a new hood

ordered an oer 2inch cowl from hawks on Monday, only to find out it was on back order. Oh well, sorry hawks i tried. also they swear their fiberglass and steel cowl hoods are identical not! lol pretty sure their fiberglass version looks like a 2 inch glasstek hood...

aren't the same!!! maybe hawks has the wrong picture up idk?

anyway found a few hoods on ebay i like, but I've never seen anyone from on here with them or that they bought them from these suppliers. any advice?

Re: problems with buying a new hood

I would be sure to buy a hood from a company that sells known good quality products. Not saying those are bad but be careful, if you get a poor quality hood it won't fit well and will require a lot of work to make it look good. I have a glasstek on my 84. I bought it directly from them and it fit very well. Cervini is also good, harwood is decent.

Agreed. You basically get what you pay for. Unless you want to sink some cash into a body shop lining thigs up for you, pay the few extra bucks.

Re: problems with buying a new hood

I have a couple thoughts here. To begin with I beleive that there are many places to buy a product from, such as carpet or hoods, but there are few companies that actually make those items. In most cases I would say only one company manufacturers the item. Recently I did a search for factory style seat covers and I found that one place actually makes it and then sells it to various distributors who vary in price. I would guess that is the same for fiberglass hoods; one company makes them and many companies sell them.

In your case I would question why mainstream aftermarket fiberglass hood dealers sell their hoods for $500+ but the evilbay guy sells his for a little bit over $200. There has got to be a difference in the hoods some where some how. Me, I would be suspect of the quality and the fit and finish of the lesser priced hood. If possible, I would want to visually inspect the hood I was purchasing in person and not rely on some internet photo of said product. But that of course won't be possible in every case.

The reason why the hood you want is on back order from Hawk's means he gets it from a manufacturer, he doesn't make it himself.

Re: problems with buying a new hood

well guys i really want steel, just don't feel like messing with fiber glass... goodmark still makes the same exact hood as oer

here is a link to the goodmark
http://www.jegs.com/i/Auto+Metal+Dir...582-2/10002/-1

and then you have the oer hood (price went up on this today from 389.99 to 414.99 wtf???)
http://www.jegs.com/i/OER/691/1668292/10002/-1

anyway i think ill try to get jegs to sell me their goodmark hood for 389.95 and link them to hawks thirdgen that shows their oer hood. it would only be 15 bucks off but still worth it...
