17 year old's first build thread
so i guess this is my build thread..im already close to being half done.. but some things to keep in mind:
I started when I was 16, I''ll be 17 on the first
Tight budget, but since me and my father are "bonding and learning together" he usually fronts the cash
This is my first build, so please I welcome any criticism and helpful hints you guys give me. I know its not the best block to start out with but it's a start, and maybe one day I will build a stroker.
I started knowing absolutely nothing, so it is also a learning experience.

Re: 17 year old's first build thread
the "canvas" of this build is a 1992 Camaro RS 'vert. when I bought it it had 106,000 miles on it, with zero rust. meaning the exhaust pipes were clean. Car came with an all original 305 TBI and 700R4 trans, both very strong runners.
First thing I did was hack off the exhaust pipe and bolt on a Hooker aerochamber cat back. then storage, and during the winter was when this build started. after winter came rim paint, headlight buckets, and misc. other things such as an open element.

Re: 17 year old's first build thread
Aluminum heads came in the mail.
i went with the GM ZZ4 heads because they were butt cheap for aluminum. the small combustion chamber squeezes the block to a 10.1:1 CR from a miserable 8.1:1. they went to the machine shop to get that big valve spring installed. maybe someday il port and polish but i have no idea how to

Pics worked for me though it would be nice if you hosted them on photobucket or something and just insert the images in the post.

In my rebuilds I always braze the pickup tube onto the oil pump. I see the old pump was done this way, I would do it with the new one also.

If you don't have the tools your local machine shop should be able to help you out.

Re: 17 year old's first build thread
ran into a problem...or two..
was tightening the bolt on the engine stand and it snapped clean off in the bellhousing
the oil pan gasket was way to thick so i made my own with RTV.. probably going to have to replace it anyways...
any ideas on the bolt?

And if the engine is out, I wouldn't wait to replace the oil pan gasket after it's in the car. It's no fun.

Re: 17 year old's first build thread
UPDATE:
Body: the cars going to the body shop in the next week or two, the guy is really hard to get ahold of but he does good work. They are gonna weld in the subframe and then send it back.
Engine: Ran out of money for the supercharger, so I think (and please correct me if I'm wrong) I am gonna get the Holley supercharger carb (its a 4 bbl 850CFM double pumper) and a budget intake manifold so I can get the engine running. Can I use the same distributor, and all that stuff on the blower? Will the 850 be too much for the engine and CR without the forced induction? the cam I'm using is a Nitroux NX276HR with a .502 lift (i dont know the numbers off the top of my head)? or is it worth it to save for a long time for the blower?
If someone could help me with the acccesories too, thatd be wonderful. I dont know what to do because the stock brackets off the 305 dont fit, and I need a serpentine setup because of the blower. any help would be great, pictures coming tonight!!!!
