Anyone here ever set up your own gears?

I've got a set of 4.10s ready to go in next week (224/230 cams like gear lol), I was wondering if anyone here has done it yourself?

I had them done by kyle's shop in my TA, he doesn't work there anymore or I'd have them do them again. And in the absence of knowing anyone skilled enough with enough time to do them, I figured I'd bite the bullet and learn myself.

So does anyone know where a good writeup might be or have any pointers?

Thanks

224/230? How cuuuute.

To keep it relevant, let me quote this to you.

"to install gears you need the following tools.
12 ton or greater shop press
dial indicator w/ magnet mount
dial calipers (or digital will work as well)
brass punches or bearing/seal drivers
dead blow hammers
ft lb torque wrench with 220# capacity
in lb torque wrench (a memory dial type is best)
bearing remover (either clamshell type or the $300 version)
pinion depth tool
and various size sockets and such.
also installing gears isnt just taking the old ones out and installing the new, you have to take specific, precise measurements.
and if this is a daily driver, its not something i would learn to do on.
spend the few hundred bucks and have a Pro do it.

lol yes the cam i have is a 224/230. Runs good on stock heads so eh why not. people are getting really good times out of the cc503.

No i have another ride so it isn't a big deal if i have to get another set or something.

I have all the tools to do it and the time and friends with the knowledge to help out so i'll probably do it myself. I've found some good writeups with pics too. I'm expecting it to take the whole day to set the pinion depth and backlash properly and get the proper pattern on the teeth.

If it was only a couple hundred i would have a pro do it, but everywhere i call wants 4-5 hun.

Dude its not hard but you dont have to change the bearings unless they are worn or you just want to. For pinion depth start with the fatcory shim and go from there and same with the carrier shims. ive had instenses were it all set up fine with the factory stuff sometimes you can just switch the carrier shims around also. it should not take a whole day if i lived closer i would come do it for you in a couple of hours but i dont have money because iam still searching for a job schnieder didnt work out i couldnt handel being gone for as long as they wanted. anyways tony give me a call if you have any questions 916-267-7554

I've done it once on a thirdgen rear in school, and it was actually better after I did it. Wasn't that hard but its a lot of measuring. don't think I'll ever do it again. If I ever change gears I'll just give Kyle a call

Kyle sent you a pm

Alright if we get stuck I'll give you a call. I've read several walkthroughs and it really looks quite easy.

I have just one question thus far: My motive gears say they'll take a .008-.012 backlash - is a certain number preferred for my application or just anything in that range will work? The application is street/strip obviously.

.008 or .010 is what you want it to be at you dont want it any tighter than that or it will burn up and any looser it will wine.
