Dragging with an auto
alright guys, i havea nice '86 Trans Am with a 305 TPI 700-R4. The way i've been dragging is holding my foot on the brak and putting rpm to 2200, then when time to go, let off.
Someone that drives a corvette told me to just put it in neutral, and floor it, then shove it into drive. I was like umm..... "wont that hurt the tranny," he said, "nah i do it all the time."
What do you guys say about that?
To me if it works it might bea better way to launch but i dunno if its good for it.

yehai wont be listening to him anymore. He is one of mys tep-dad's navy buddies. I tlak to him every once ina while, we race soemtimes, but since my step-dad is in iraq when i tlak to him i'm by myself so....
MY step-dad knows howto drag an auto real good too. He had a custom ordered '97 Trans Am WS6, with a corvette LT4, and Corvette auto tranny(to this day i have no idea why he got the auto, he drive a manual real good to :: Shrug :. This car would fly too, he took me on the dainespoitn dridge here, after he got the computer reprogrammed, we were going 160MPH. At night nobody is on that 1 mile long bridge so its open for speed. To bad, we sold it in '00 for a '01 dodge ram 2500 V-10, the v-10 supplented his engine needs for the time being. I tlel ya that car was absolutely awesome.

yea neutral dropping is bad..when i was 15 i had a buick regal.. i was young and stuid.. and reved to about 4500rpm and through it to drive....needless to say tranny fluid was pouring out from under... the pinion gear was laying in pieces under the tranny... shot through the bottom of the tranny ... so neutral dropping=bad

if you're stock, you'll get your best times by putting it in 1, holding the brake with your left foot, and bringing the RPMs up to around 2300-3200 (try diffrent ones until you find what the car wants)
as you let go of the brake put the gas to the floor... unless you're on street tires.. then you'll have to feed it in....
when you hit your shiftpoint, put it in 2... then put it in d......
....and if you arnt at the finish line by then, take the 4.50 rear out.

another little known fact is that about 75% of Corvettes are automatics. so if your looking for a manual its going to be pretty hard to find one of the 25% thats not all beat to hell. people tend to abuse manual trans cars more often than autos

Yeahhh that's what it seems like, the 2 vette's ive ever been in were both auto, and good point about the consistent times. As long as u have a TQ convertor auto's are chill... but cmon now, which ones more fun to cruise around in?

trans brake has the gears loaded and everything, you just have a 2nd gear jammed on so it cant move..
in nutural, nothings loaded and you'll slam everything together and bust it apart.

Ha, I have a friend who USED to own a '96 t-top 3400-powered Camaro, he used to love doing brake stands and neutral drops. Of course, it was the only way for him to chirp tires, besided the infamous brake stand, which did horrible things to his brakes.
He's cruising, showing off his totally powerful 3400 (it had Flowmasters, so people thought it was a de-badged V8 Camaro) and he does a neutral drop. From five grand! His rear-end u-joint exploded. Driveshaft goes floppy-flop-flop-GRIIIIND all over the place. He learned his lesson...

What's so bad about an automatic? As long as it's tight and you have the power to back it up, there's really no shame in driving an automatic.
Frankly, I've driven a few T-5 cars, and I think they suck. I'll take a thirdgen with a nice crisp 700R4 anyday.

ughhh
Never do a neutral drop man..
I have a friend with a 96 Taurus V6.. He did neutral-drop burnouts all the time.. I have no idea how it ever held up, but he'd punch it out to the rev limiter, and do huge smokey burnouts! It was Fo*d, but still, ughhh.
By the way he still drives the car today, but i took it and showed him how to do the proper burnies. he thinks it's great, i think he's an idiot.

I did a neutral drop once and my tranny survived. LOL... I think it's cause my old tires had no traction. Anyway, I wouldn't do it ever again... I'm sure I'd grenade it next time.

I forgot to add my .02 on the subject at hand....
nuetral drop is something you do with a company car when you hate the company....or perhaps the loaner car that drive while your dealer is doing a warranty repair and taking too long.
Nuetral drops= broken stuff...
That reminds me of an old jam by Prong: "pick up, pick up, pick up the broken pieces..."
bring some quick-dri for the 8 quarts of ATF too...have fun!

Anyway, I once neutral dropped at every stoplight in traffic one day 'cause I was bored and pissed at the traffic. (Mostly at the BAD DRIVERS making the traffic worse.) But, I have an open diff, and had HORRIBLE tires so it just spun, it barely chirped. I doubt I did any damage at all, but I was trying to break something as an excuse to step up to stronger stuff.
Everything still works great now. But everyone knows don't EVER do neutral drops. My friend borrowed his bro-in-laws (or someones) Impy SS and rev'd it up really high at a stoplight to launch. Bad idea, guess who won that race?
Laters,
Scott

the sheer accleration stress of the trans internals alone is enough to break it... regardless of the rest of the drivetrain.

Neutral drops are fine. I can make good money from changing a broken transmission. When you split the case, you lose the core.
An automatic transmission uses a fluid coupler (torque converter) and hydraulic pressure to apply clutches or bands inside the tranny to give it gears. When you do a neutral drop, you're creating stresses to the tranny that it's not designed to use. If you want to launch at a high rpm then buy a high stall converter or install a manual transmission.

NEUTRAL DROP EEK!! You will lose the trans sooner or later....strike that I mean sooner or sooner yet!!
I dunno bout launching a 3rd but in my TA when I had a stock verter I got the best times by just stabbing it from idle and letting the computer shift it.
