tire pressure, SCCA

I plan to do my first autocross in my camaro this weekend. Last event (my first one) I drove my other car. I quickly discovered I had to much pressure in the rear tires, and not enough up front.

So, this past week, I picked up a set of s10 blazer 16x8 wheels, and just 1 hour ago, I picked up a set of used 245/50/zr16 firestone firehawk sz50ep tires.

What are some pressure(s) you more experienced folks run on this size tire, maybe even this brand tire too I'm sure every cars a little different, but I would like to get into a ball park area that would be easly adjustable on site.

well, alot of it depends on the track, for that day, in your car, on you specific set of tires, that matches your driving style

now, i don't know a whole lot about that tire, but i since it is easier to take air out, then add air i would start a little high, remove as needed, and remove as they heat up. maybe start 42 front, 36 rear, or somewhere in that range.

thanks dewey. Parking lot is small, so it wont have many long straits, and will be mostly all curves. I'm gussing lap times of mid 30's to low 50's.

I'm still new, this is only my second run, so I'm not "pushing" the car as hard as a trained driver would.

I run Kuhmo ECSTA 712 on the front and BFG Comp TA's on the rear. I typically start at 40 psi up front and 38 out back. If you aren't too sure of what pressures to run I recomend using some shoe polish on the shoulder of your tires. Depending on how much polish is taken off tells you how much air you need to add or subtract. As the tires warm up I pull out some air to keep the pressure around 40.

I hope this helps some, but if you can feel the tire getting caught under the rim... then you need more pressure. If the car seems like it reacts pretty harsh to bumps and is easily upset by them, then I would take a few psi out and make another run. Alot of it goes by how you want the car to feel, so the choice is yours.

By comparison I like to keep the tires around 35 psi front and rear for normal driving. Hope this helps.

I run Goodyear Eagle F1's and did the shoe polish trick on my 245/45-16's and found 30 front and 27psi out back was best for my setup.

When I've autocrossed with street tires (Kumho 712s 245/45/16) I run 45psi in the front and 35psi in the rear.

wow, it does sound like track and tire makes the air pressure very alot.

I do know about the shoe polish trick. I did that at the last event, and I was the only one doing it. After a few people asked what I was doing, I noticed a few others doing it.
