track times

ran my 92 t/a today for the first time... specs: TPI 350, 700R4, WS6, hardtop, street tires, 107,500mi...stock, no cats, flowmaster

track and cond... Bradenton Motorsports Park, damn near sea level, 55-65degrees, small tailwind.

couldnt get better than a 2.1 60 foot, 15.2@87 quarter, car was demolishing the street tires, Goodyear Eagle RS-A's... car ran strong till the 1/8th, then fell flat on its face.. i smoked an LT1 car until the 1/8th mark... whats my best best for some better top end?? i know the car should have ran faster but drag radials will help solve the traction issues, but what are most of you guys runnings who have the same engine combos??? just tryin to figure it out, b/c an engine build is in the future, but cant stay away from the track....

You should easily be trapping 93-96 MPH. I'd check your timing and replace the fuel filter. Possibly plugs and wires also.

well traction has been an issue, but mods you have done?? thats roughly the times i want to run.... i was thinking of repalcing the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and upgraded remote coil.. i've seen kits for sale and which one works real well???

If you want topend power...you are going to have to ditch the junk TPI. They are great for down low but after about 4200-4400, they fall flat on their face. The best I could get this year with everything the same plus custom exhaust and longtubes...was 14.8@92 with a 2.00 60' on Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's.

I have plans for an engine build in the plans as well and am hoping for low 12's out of it.

well all i have done t it is when i bought it the dual cats were deleted and it had a flowmaster... thats it.. it has 107,000mi... they are great 1/8mile cars though... i smoked a 4th gen Z till the 1/8th, then he pulled all over on me.. i was planning an engine build and i was either going to do a vortec setup w/ a cam, and long tubes, and all the ignition and stuff, or i was wondering if a 400 ci sb will fit in there and keep my tpi.... not sure yet, but at least i rebuilt the trans.. it took a dive on me after a month, it wouldn't shift into 2nd unless i let off at 3500, and babying the revs.... will MT ET streets be too sticky for the stock rear end??? not sure if i want those or just buy nitto's cuase their cheaper and they should hook on a fairly stock car... i cant launch at any more 1100rpm and my best 60 foot was 2.1 on Goodyear Eagle RS-A's... they suck on the track... thanks for the info though, oh and where do you run out of, cause im in Fl and we only race in the winter cause it runs a crapload better, and the track we use is Bradenton Motorsports Park and its elevation is like 50ft above sea level....

Both of you guys should be running much better. I ran 14.4 @ 95 with 135,000 miles, K&N's, gutted cats and a hack job cat-back. Currently, I have 194,000 miles. Mods are nothing special. They include ported plenum, bumped timing, cooler thermostat, cooler fan switch, TPIS Airfoil, TPIS AFPR, Accel 24# Injectors, MSD Coil, Accel Module, Bosch Platinum +4 plugs, JET Servo, SLP 1 3/4" coated Headers, SLP Loudmouth Cat-back with a Dynomax bullet instead of the resonator, Summit Diff Girdle, Lakewood LCA's and Panhard bar, 17x9.5 ARE TT II's with Nitto 275/40/17 up front and 17x11 ARE TT II's with Nitto 315/35/17 DR's out back. My TB, Runners, Intake base, Heads, Cam and Chip are all stock. My best 60 ft. is a 1.89. Another guy I race at the track has a '91 GTA with the L98. His mods include SLP Runners, Flowmaster Cat-back, home made cold air, bumped timing and fuel pressure. He's still running the factory exhaust manifolds. His best is a 13.5 @101. The key to getting great times out of a TPI is to keep the intake as cool as possible. The air travels nearly 2 feet on average from the TB to the valve and picks up a lot of heat on the way. I can easily gain 3 tenths and 3 MPH at the track by icing the manifold.

Your low MPH isn't a reflection of traction but rather a loss of HP. Like I posted above, a tune-up and some free mods should get you running some decent times as long as you have a healthy engine.

I know I should be running better...I am running extremely rich and have tried to lean it out and can't get it above 10:1 A/F. Only mods I have are: TPIS Airfoil, 180* Tstat, Hedman LTs, custom exhaust from headers back, MSD Blaster Coil, BMR adjustable lca's, and lca reloc. brackets (in middle hole).

Any idea why? I'm still running my stock chip, 24# Injectors and 44 psi of fuel pressure and my air/fuel was right around 12.5:1 on the dyno.

Blu...I don't have the slightest clue why. One thing I just realized that I didn't list in my mods was SVO 24# injectors. When I dynoed it, we backed the screw in the AFPR all the way out to try and lean it out and couldn't get it to do anything. It leaned it out maybe 0.2. We even tried pinching off the fuel lines to see if that would lean it out any and that didn't even help.

My best on the 245/50/16 Cooper Cobra's and factory 16X8's was a 1.98, best on 275/40/17 Nitto DR's and 9.5" ARE TT II's was a 1.92. What I get is either tire spin if the track prep is lousy or a bog. I'd probably gain quite a bit with a Vigilante converter.

supposed to go to the track this weekend, but ive been sick as hell... i replaced the air filter w/ a K&N, and have a 160 stat, but im gonna put the tires down to about 25lbs to see if they grab... the weather has been pretty cold for central fl, but i have an 1800 stall and if i put it past 1200, the tires roast, even with good track prep... oh well, just need a place to find cheap wheels to fit the third gen cars...
also i went to the local dump the other day, and rolled up on the scale, stopped, looked up, looked inside and left... the scale said 3600lbs w/ me in it.. i dont think that is 100% accurate, but hardtop cars are lighter than t-tops.... how much you guys weigh ??

I weighed my car at work on the truck scale and came in at 3480 with 1/2 tank of gas and no me. It's a hardtop, all the power options, A/C and I'm sure my rims and tires haven't helped cut any weight.

finally went to the track saturday morning... temp was 70's, humidity, high as hell.. well i couldnt launch at any higher than 900rpm on the street tires and had to slowly get into it, if i stabbed it they roasted... my best was a 14.8 @ 92mph, with a best of 2.01 60ft... i made four consistant passes at 14.8, then a 16.0 in the middle, than a 15.2 at the end... i had to baby it off the tree, but i smoked a beefed harley f-150 to the eighth mile then he pulled.. i figured if it were colder i might have gotten another tenth or two, and some DR's should help me see low 14's.. i just want to find a complete ignition kit to upgrade all in one shot.... not bad times though overall, i think..

It's all about power to weight. Total weight needs to be race weight. Driver, fuel, etc since that's what the engine has to push down the track.

The bad news is that even 500 hp won't run 12's if you can't get the power to the ground. A cold and slippery track is hard to get traction even with slicks although slicks are still much better than street tires.

yeah, cold track wont be good for street tires or slicks if they wont hook right... i race my friends oo' T/A, and it runs 12's, but that car is a totally different beast, i just want to get low 14's or possibly high 13's on this 350... but my plans are to build up another 350 on the side cause this one is my only car... but would i benefit at the track with some new rear suspension parts?? everything is all stock and orginal from 1992...
